As long as they comply with international flushability standards, flushable wet wipes can be considered flushable. We understand that the comfort, hygiene, and overall convenience provided by wet wipes/wet toilet wipes cannot be matched by traditional toilet paper. Flushable wet wipes take this convenience to a new level and are therefore highly favored by consumers.
However, we also know that wet wipes claiming to be flushable but actually not meeting flushability requirements have caused significant problems for municipalities and authorities worldwide, such as accumulation of waste, blockages in water supply systems, and wastewater treatment facilities.
This is why the standards developed by the International Water Services Flushability Group (IWSFG) are essential for flushable wet wipe manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, and consumers.
Introduction to IWSFG
The International Water Services Flushability Group (IWSFG) is an organization consisting of water associations, utilities, and professionals. It aims to provide clear guidance on what should and should not be flushed down toilets to protect customers, wastewater systems, workers, and the environment. The organization is committed to developing standards and testing methods to ensure that flushable products do not cause adverse impacts on the environment and infrastructure when flushed into wastewater systems.
The establishment of IWSFG is of great significance in addressing global water service flushability issues. Sewer blockages, wastewater treatment system failures, and water environment pollution not only increase operational costs but also pose risks to ecosystems and human health. By establishing an international organization such as IWSFG, experts from different countries and regions can work together, share experience, and develop unified standards and testing methods, thereby improving the disintegration performance of flushable products and reducing environmental issues.
Introduction to IWSFG Testing Methods
IWSFG has developed a series of strict testing methods to evaluate the disintegration performance of flushable products and their impact on wastewater systems during flushing. These include the following aspects:
● Products must comply with environmental standards and must not contain intentionally added plastic fibers (TAPPI/ANSI Test Method T401 Fiber Analysis)
● Products must be able to clear toilets and drainage pipes (FG501.R1(18) Toilet Bowl & Drain Line Clearance)
● Products must disintegrate under water pressure conditions similar to wastewater pipelines (IWSFG 2018 PAS3 Slosh Box Disintegration)
● Products must meet settling requirements (FG504.R1(18) Settling Test)
● Products must be biodegradable (FG506A.R1(18) Anaerobic Biodisintegration)
Only when these standards are met can wet wipes be truly considered flushable. Only when these standards are met can consumers truly trust the wet wipes they use.
EDANA/INDA Flushability Guidelines
In addition to IWSFG standards, there are also EDANA/INDA flushability guidelines.
The Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) and its European counterpart, the European Disposables and Nonwovens Association (EDANA), have developed flushability guidelines for evaluating flushable products.
To meet the requirements of the EDANA/INDA Flushability Guidelines, seven tests are required, and all tests must be successfully completed:

● FG503.R1(18) Household Pump Test
● FG504.R1(18) Settling Test
● FG505A.R1(18) Aerobic Biodisintegration Test

● FG507.R1(18) Municipal Sewage Pump Test
