What is MSDS/SDS? Why Is It Important?
MSDS/SDS (Material Safety Data Sheet / Safety Data Sheet) is a document that provides information on the potential hazards of a product and instructions for safe handling. MSDS/SDS is required for all potentially hazardous products and all lithium battery shipments, regardless of whether they are classified as hazardous materials. Potentially hazardous materials, such as liquids, creams, and powders, may also require an MSDS/SDS to demonstrate that they are not hazardous.

Typically, when contacting a shipping company to arrange transportation of hazardous goods, the MSDS/SDS for the shipment will be required. If the MSDS/SDS cannot be provided at that time, the hazardous materials cannot be transported.
What Does MSDS/SDS Include?

◎ Identification of the Substance/Preparation and Company
This section provides the product name, as well as the manufacturer’s or distributor’s name, address, and contact information. It may also include an emergency telephone number that can be contacted immediately in case of an emergency. In addition, this section provides information on recommended uses and restrictions on use.
◎ Hazards Identification
This section indicates whether the substance is flammable, corrosive, toxic, or irritating. The severity of these hazards is typically communicated through signal words such as “Warning” or “Danger,” along with hazard statements describing the nature of the risks.
◎ Composition/Information on Ingredients
This section lists the chemical components of the substance and their relative concentrations. For complex mixtures, not all components may be listed; only those that contribute to the hazard classification of the product are included.
◎ First Aid Measures
This section describes the measures to be taken when a person is exposed to a chemical through inhalation, skin or eye contact, or ingestion. It provides information on symptoms and required treatment, and the information should be specific and practical.
◎ Firefighting Measures
This section covers appropriate firefighting methods, specialized protective equipment required by firefighters, and potential hazards that may occur during the combustion of different materials.
◎ Accidental Release Measures
This section provides detailed procedures to be followed in the event of a substance spill or leakage, including emergency response measures, protective equipment, and methods for controlling and cleaning up the release to prevent environmental damage.
◎ Safe Handling and Storage
This section provides guidance on safe handling procedures to minimize exposure risks, as well as instructions for proper storage to prevent incidents such as fires or exposure to harmful fumes.
◎ Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
This section includes measures to control workers’ exposure to the substance, such as recommendations for ventilation systems, personal protective equipment including gloves or respirators, and appropriate eye protection.
◎ Physical and Chemical Properties
This section provides technical information about the substance, including appearance, odor, boiling point, melting point, flash point (the temperature at which ignition may occur), water solubility, and other relevant properties.
◎ Stability and Reactivity
This section provides information on the stability of the substance under normal conditions, as well as substances or conditions that may cause hazardous reactions, including light, heat, or other chemicals.
◎ Toxicological Information
This section describes the health effects caused by exposure to the substance, including immediate effects and potential long-term health consequences.
◎ Ecological Information
This section provides information on the environmental impact of the substance, including toxicity to aquatic organisms, persistence and degradability, and bioaccumulation potential.
◎ Disposal Considerations
This section provides recommendations regarding appropriate disposal methods, chemicals, recycling or reuse of containers, and safe disposal procedures.
◎ Transport Information
This section provides guidance on the safe transportation of the substance, including any special precautions that should be taken.
◎ Regulatory Information
This section provides detailed information on substances subject to specific regulatory requirements, including applicable international, federal, state, or local regulations.
◎ Other Information
What Is the Main Purpose of MSDS/SDS?

◎ Hazard Identification: MSDS/SDS provides detailed information on the physical and chemical properties of substances, potential hazards, safe storage, handling and use procedures, emergency response measures, and precautions required in case of exposure.
◎ Protecting Workers: MSDS/SDS protects workers from potential harm by providing information on hazards associated with chemicals or products. It includes detailed first-aid measures and recommended personal protective equipment for handling the substance.
◎ Emergency Preparedness: In emergency situations involving hazardous materials, such as leaks or fires, MSDS/SDS provides critical information on safe handling procedures.
◎ Environmental Safety: MSDS/SDS also provides information on the environmental impact of substances, including guidance on safe and environmentally responsible handling methods.
Can MSDS/SDS Be Reused?
Only under certain circumstances may the same MSDS/SDS be used for repeated shipments when the hazardous materials are exactly the same. For example, when the same lithium batteries are used, the same MSDS/SDS may be applied to multiple product types containing those lithium batteries. However, an MSDS/SDS must still be provided for each shipment to demonstrate that the hazardous materials have not changed.
