    These ISO standards apply to plastic products, polymer resins, monomers, or additives manufactured from bio-based or fossil-based feedstocks.

     

     
     

    ISO 16620-2 Introduction

    ISO 16620 addresses the determination of the bio-based content of plastics. ISO 16620-2 is the second part of the ISO 16620 series and focuses on the determination of bio-based carbon content in plastics.

    ISO 16620-2 specifies the calculation method for determining the bio-based carbon content of monomers, polymers, plastic materials, and products based on measurements of carbon-14 (¹⁴C) content.

    ISO 16620-2 applies to plastic products and plastic materials, such as plasticizers and modifiers.

    Polymer resins, monomers, and additives may be derived from either bio-based or fossil-based feedstocks. Determining the bio-based content of plastic products provides valuable information for evaluating their environmental impact.

    ISO 16620-2 specifies the determination of bio-based carbon content in plastics and is applicable to:

    Why Use ISO 16620-2?

    Increasing the use of biomass resources in the production of plastic products can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease dependence on fossil resources.Current plastic products may consist of bio-based synthetic polymers, fossil-based synthetic polymers, and natural polymers, and may also contain additives derived from bio-based materials.

    “Bio-based plastics” refer to plastics containing all or part of their materials derived from biological sources. The “bio-based content” of bio-based plastics is defined as the proportion of carbon derived from biological sources, the proportion of bio-based synthetic polymers, or the mass fraction of bio-based materials.

    ISO 16620-2 provides definitions and symbols related to bio-based carbon content and provides guidance on sampling procedures.ISO 16620-2 helps determine carbon-14 (¹⁴C) content, total carbon content, and total organic carbon content. It also provides guidance on calculating bio-based carbon content and preparing test reports.Furthermore, ISO 16620-2 assists in determining the bio-based carbon content of monomers, polymers, plastic materials, and finished products.

    AMS Testing Method Introduction

    AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) is a high-precision technique used to measure the ratios of radioactive isotopes. This technology is widely applied in various fields.

    Other Relevant Carbon-14-Based Bio-Based Content Testing Standards

    ASTM D6866 applies to all types of products (solid, liquid, and gas).

    ISO 19984 applies to rubber and rubber products, including polyurethane.

    EN 16640 applies to all bio-based products.

    EN 16785 applies to any carbon-containing solid, liquid, or gaseous products.

    EN 16766 applies only to bio-based solvents.

    EN 16807 applies only to bio-based lubricants.

    EN 17228 applies to bio-based plastics and plastic products.
