    EN 717-2 Standard Introduction

    Formaldehyde is a hazardous substance. Long-term exposure to environments with high formaldehyde concentrations may cause health problems such as respiratory irritation, allergic reactions and increased cancer risks. Therefore, controlling formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels is essential. EN 717-2 determines formaldehyde release using the gas analysis method. This method can effectively simulate formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels under actual indoor conditions and provides reliable support for protecting human health.

     

     

    EN 717-2 Scope of Application

    EN 717-2 applies to wood-based panels including plywood, particleboard, medium density fibreboard (MDF), and other similar materials.

     

     
     

    EN 717-2 Test Method

    A specimen of specified dimensions is placed in a sealed chamber. The conditions inside the chamber are controlled according to the standard requirements, allowing formaldehyde released from the specimen to mix with the chamber air. The mixed air is continuously passed through a bottle containing water, where the formaldehyde is absorbed. After 4 hours of testing, the formaldehyde concentration in the water is determined using a photometric method. The formaldehyde emission level is calculated based on the formaldehyde concentration in the water, testing duration and specimen surface area.

     

     

     
     

    Note : For plywood used under external conditions, formaldehyde emission testing is not required. However, plywood used under internal conditions shall be tested and classified as E1 or E2 according to the test results.

     

    EN 717-2 Classification

    According to Annex B of EN 13986 (Formaldehyde Classes), wood-based panel products tested according to EN 717-2 are classified as follows:

    E1 Class:
    Formaldehyde release ≤ 3.5 mg/m²·h

    E2 Class:
    3.5 mg/m²·h < Formaldehyde release ≤ 8.0 mg/m²·h
