ASTM D6007 Standard Test Method for Formaldehyde Concentration in Wood Products
Category:
Formaldehyde Emission
ASTM D6007 Standard Description
ASTM D6007 Standard Test Method for Determining Formaldehyde Concentrations in Air from Wood Products Using a Small-Scale Chamber
ASTM D6007 Test Introduction
Wood products refer to various products primarily manufactured from wood and are widely used in home decoration, furniture manufacturing, structural construction, and artwork production. However, wood products may release formaldehyde, and long-term exposure to high concentrations of formaldehyde may harm human health, potentially causing symptoms such as headaches, irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, breathing difficulties, and skin allergies. In severe cases, exposure may even lead to diseases such as leukemia and nasopharyngeal cancer. ASTM D6007 can be used to determine formaldehyde emission levels from composite wood products, including hardwood plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard.

ASTM D6007 Scope of Application
ASTM D6007 is primarily used for testing the following composite wood products:
Hardwood plywood (HWPW), particleboard (PB), medium-density fiberboard (MDF), as well as laminated products and finished goods containing composite wood products (such as solid wood flooring, laminate flooring, furniture, and kitchen cabinets).

ASTM D6007 Test Method
According to ASTM D6007, filters are used to reduce the background formaldehyde concentration in the test environment to no more than 0.02 ppm. The sample is then placed in the test chamber, allowing airflow to circulate across the entire surface of the specimen. The test chamber shall be maintained at a temperature of 25 ± 1 °C and a relative humidity of 50 ± 4% during the test, and relevant parameters shall be recorded throughout the testing process.
ASTM D6007 Basis for determination
The formaldehyde emission limits for composite wood products are as follows:
- Hardwood plywood (HWPW): 0.05 ppm
- Particleboard (PB): 0.09 ppm
- Medium-density fiberboard (>8 mm) (MDF): 0.11 ppm
- Thin medium-density fiberboard (≤8 mm): 0.13 ppm
Note: Finished solid wood flooring shall comply with the HWPW formaldehyde emission limit of 0.05 ppm.
