The Vegan Trademark UK Vegan Certification

In modern life, people are paying increasing attention to vegan certified products. The latest “Vegan Beauty” report released by The Vegan Society shows that 83% of UK shoppers would like to have more vegan cosmetics and toiletries available, and more than 94% of vegans seek the Vegan Trademark when shopping. This demonstrates that the demand for products carrying The Vegan Trademark remains strong.

The Vegan Society covers a wide range of categories, including food, beverages, fashion, beauty products, toiletries, household products, pet care, food services, and more. Any product with a traceable supply chain can apply for The Vegan Trademark. Currently, more than 68,000 products have obtained certification.

    Origin of The Vegan Trademark

In November 1944, the founding members of The Vegan Society created the term “vegan” and planted the seed for the world’s first vegan society. The Vegan Trademark is at the core of The Vegan Society. It was established in 1990 as an internationally recognized certification and has become an important foundation for consumers to identify vegan products.

    What is Veganism?

Veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude, as far as possible, all forms of exploitation and cruelty to animals, whether for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Veganism promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans, and the environment. From a dietary perspective, veganism refers to the practice of avoiding all products that are wholly or partially derived from animals.

However, veganism is not limited to diet. To avoid the exploitation of animals for any purpose, vegans do not use animal products or products tested on animals, including accessories and clothing, as well as cosmetics and toiletries.

Why is The Vegan Trademark Important?

    (1) Transparency: Helps consumers avoid unverified product claims and demonstrates that your products are trustworthy.

    (2) Convenience: Saves your customers time by placing one of the world’s most recognized vegan symbols on your vegan products.

    (3) Trust: Provides strong evidence to support your vegan claims and demonstrates your social responsibility.

    The Vegan Trademark Standards

The Vegan Trademark is a strict international vegan standard. When applying for The Vegan Trademark, applicants need to pay particular attention to the following 7 standard requirements:

    (1) Animals: The Vegan Society defines “animals” as the entire animal kingdom, including vertebrates and multicellular invertebrates. This term may refer to a species or an individual and can be used as a noun or adjective, generally referring to non-human animals.

    (2) Animal Ingredients: Products must not use animal products, by-products, or derivatives during manufacturing and/or development.

    (3) Animal Testing: No form of animal testing may be conducted during product development and/or manufacturing.

    (4) Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO): Animal genes or animal-derived substances must not be used to develop and/or produce genetically modified organisms. Products containing or potentially containing GMOs must be appropriately labeled.

    (5) Cross-Contamination: Brands must minimize cross-contamination with non-vegan products to comply with Vegan Trademark standards.

    (6) Food Service Establishments: Before preparing, cooking, and serving vegan products, surfaces and utensils must be thoroughly cleaned to avoid cross-contamination as much as possible. It is recommended to prepare vegan dishes before preparing non-vegan dishes.

    (7) Production Facilities: Companies must take reasonable measures to eliminate the risk of animal-derived ingredients within production areas, including segregation measures, hygiene practices, and management procedures. Production facilities must be thoroughly cleaned before switching production lines, and it is strongly recommended to operate vegan production lines first.
