The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) is a trade association headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. Its members are mainly mattress manufacturers and component suppliers from the global mattress industry.

Founded in 1915, ISPA was originally known as the National Mattress Manufacturers Association and was renamed the National Bedding Manufacturers Association two years later. Its objectives were to establish state labeling laws (see Law Labeling) and address consumer health and hygiene issues. In 1987, the association changed its name to the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) to reflect the growing participation of international members. After nearly a century of development, ISPA now has approximately 600 members from 40 countries and regions.

ISPA’s mission is to lead and advance the interests of the sleep products industry. It represents the bedding industry in addressing commercial, health, safety, and environmental issues, including legislative advocacy at both state and federal levels. It also promotes a positive public image of the sleep products industry.

    Better Sleep Council (BSC)

BSC was founded by ISPA in 1979. Its goal is to increase mattress sales and shorten the mattress replacement cycle by educating consumers about the importance of sleep for health and quality of life, while highlighting the critical role of sleep surfaces and sleep environments in sleep quality.

BSC conducts regular consumer research on mattress attitudes and shopping experiences. The results help BSC develop its messaging. ISPA membership fees support BSC research and projects. BSC’s public relations campaigns aim to make mattresses a priority when consumers allocate disposable income, reaching U.S. consumers through print, broadcast, and online media.

The latest example is the “Stop Sleeping Around” campaign. Through short videos and visual content, the campaign shows that consumers can sleep anywhere, not just in their own beds, reinforcing that daytime fatigue may result from insufficient sleep. To achieve 7–8 hours of quality sleep, consumers may need to replace their mattress with one that provides better comfort and support. The campaign highlights the importance of sleep and mattress replacement in an engaging way, supporting BSC’s mission.
