EN 1149-5 Protective clothing against electrostatic discharge — Material properties and design requirements

    Category:

    Protective Clothing

    EN 1149-5 Standard Description

EN 1149-5 Protective clothing - Electrostatic properties - Part 5: Material performance and design requirements

    EN 1149-5 Standard Introduction

EN 1149-5 specifies the material performance and design requirements for electrostatic protective clothing.Such clothing is designed to reduce the risk of ignition caused by electrostatic discharge generated by friction between objects, such as when elbows or knees come into contact with walls or similar surfaces. This protection is particularly important when working with flammable materials, such as gases or fuels.

    EN 1149-5 Scope of Application

EN 1149-5 electrostatic protective clothing is suitable for workers in industries including petrochemicals, energy, refining, maintenance, and offshore operations.

    EN 1149-5 Performance Requirements

Antistatic protective clothing shall comply with EN ISO 13688 requirements, and testing shall be conducted after cleaning.

    (1) Material Performance Requirements:

    ◎ Charge Decay (EN 1149-3): Half-life (t50) geometric mean < 4 seconds.

    ◎ Surface Resistance (EN 1149-1): Geometric mean ≤ 2.5 × 10⁹ Ω.

◎ Spacing of Conductive Fibers: If conductive fibers are incorporated into the material, the spacing shall not exceed 10 mm.

    (2) General Design Requirements:

◎ Clothing shall completely cover non-compliant materials.

◎ The outer layer material of multilayer garments shall comply with antistatic requirements.

◎ The garment shall be grounded through the wearer (resistance < 10⁸ Ω).

    (3) External Attachment Requirements:

Non-antistatic accessories shall have a width of ≤ 50 mm. If the width exceeds 50 mm, the total area shall not exceed 10,000 mm².

    (4) Electrical Component Limitations:

Conductive components shall be made of antistatic materials. The material shall either completely cover the conductive components or meet the capacitance requirement of < 3 pF.

    EN 1149-5 Symbol Requirements

The marking on antistatic protective clothing shall include the following two graphic symbols:

◎ ISO 7000-2415: Indicates the “Antistatic Protection” symbol.

◎ ISO 7000-1641: Indicates the “Refer to the Manufacturer’s Instructions” symbol.
