Respiratory Protective Devices – Test Methods – Part 4: Flame Test
Category:
Protective Mask
Standard Name
EN 13274-4 Respiratory Protective Devices — Methods of Test — Part 4: Flame Test
Standard Background
The flame exposure test is one of the test methods used for evaluating respiratory protective devices. In workplaces where breathing air may become hazardous, such as when harmful substance concentrations increase or oxygen levels decrease significantly, workers must use appropriate respiratory protection.
The oxygen concentration in inhaled air is approximately 21%. If the oxygen concentration falls below this level, it may adversely affect human health. Air pollutants refer to harmful particles or substances that pose risks to humans, animals, plants, organisms, and ecosystems.
According to their sources, pollutants can generally be classified into two categories: naturally occurring pollutants, such as mineral dust, and synthetic or man-made pollutants, such as vehicle exhaust emissions and industrial emissions. Pollutants entering the human body through the respiratory system may cause various health problems.
Since oxygen is a flammable and combustible gas, respiratory protective devices, especially breathing hoses, shall undergo flame testing to ensure safety performance.
Test Introduction
Method 1:The specimen is exposed to flames from an array of six burners at a temperature of (950 ± 50)°C for (5 ± 0.5) seconds.

Method 2:The specimen is exposed to a flame at a temperature of (800 ± 50)°C for (12 ± 0.5) seconds, with the center of the flame contacting the edge of the test specimen.

Method 3:The test specimen is fixed and passed through the flame at a temperature of (800 ± 50)°C at a speed of (60 ± 5) mm/s.
