EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 Standard Introduction
A glove is a type of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) designed to protect the hands and related areas. Gloves may also extend to cover part of the forearm and arm.EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 specifies the general requirements for glove design and manufacture, as well as related test methods for evaluating factors such as glove material performance, water resistance, comfort, and harmlessness.
EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 Scope of Application
EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 is applicable to all types of protective gloves.
EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 Label Requirements
EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 requires labels to include the following information:
◎ The name, trademark, or other identification mark of the manufacturer or authorized representative;
◎ Glove name (product name or part number, allowing users to purchase the product from authorized distributors and clearly identify the product within the manufacturer’s product range);
◎ Size designation;
◎ When a glove complies with one or more specific European standards, the corresponding standard pictogram shall be displayed (see relevant references);
◎ Each pictogram shall be accompanied by the applicable standard reference and performance level, arranged according to the sequence specified in the relevant standard.

◎ Markings shall remain clearly visible, legible, and durable throughout the glove’s service life. No markings or text that may be confused with the required information shall be applied to the gloves.
EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 Harmlessness requirements
To ensure the harmlessness of protective gloves, manufacturers shall verify that gloves do not contain hazardous substances, including:
◎ Heavy metals or carcinogenic substances;
◎ Chromium content shall be below the detection limit, namely 3 mg/kg;
◎ The pH value shall be neutral, remaining between 3.5 and 9.5;
◎ Protein content shall also be determined according to the requirements of the standard.

◎ When protective gloves are used for precision or non-precision tasks, flexibility may be an important performance factor. EN 420:2003+A1:2009 specifies a dexterity test to evaluate glove flexibility. The test requires the operator to pick up a needle within 30 seconds, with different needle sizes used to determine the flexibility level. The performance levels are classified as follows:

EN 420:2003 + A1:2009 Permeability Requirements
EN 420:2003+A1:2009 specifies requirements related to glove water vapor permeability, which evaluates the ability of gloves to allow or resist water vapor transmission.For a given glove, the water vapor transmission rate shall be at least 5 mg/cm²/h within 8 hours, while traditional safety gloves typically have a value of 8 mg/cm²/h.
