    Introduction to AS/NZS 2098.11 Standard

    Plywood is an engineered wood product made from multiple layers of veneer bonded together, offering high strength, excellent stability, and ease of processing. It is widely used in construction, furniture, packaging, and interior decoration. However, due to the potential release of free formaldehyde from the adhesives used in plywood manufacturing, controlling formaldehyde emissions is crucial for safeguarding indoor air quality and human health. AS/NZS 2098.11 is a joint Australian/New Zealand standard that specifies a method for measuring formaldehyde emissions from plywood (including structural plywood, decorative plywood, and laminated veneer products).

    AS/NZS 2098.11 Testing Method

    This standard utilizes the Desiccator Method to determine formaldehyde emissions from plywood. The core principle involves placing the test sample in a sealed desiccator, where formaldehyde released over a 24-hour period is absorbed by distilled water. The formaldehyde content is then quantitatively analyzed using the Acetylacetone Spectrophotometric Method. The detailed testing procedure is as follows:

    Test Preparation: Before testing, several preparatory steps are required to ensure accuracy. This includes equipment calibration, such as verifying the wavelength of the spectrophotometer and checking the airtightness of the desiccator. The reagents, particularly the acetylacetone-ammonium solution, need to be freshly prepared prior to use. Additionally, the test specimens must undergo pre-conditioning by being equilibrated in an environment of 20 ± 2°C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity for 7 days until they reach a constant weight.

     

    Official Testing Process: First, 300 mL of distilled water is added to the crystallization dish and placed inside the desiccator. Ten test specimens are then arranged within the desiccator in such a way that they do not make contact with each other. The desiccator is sealed and placed in a temperature-controlled environment. After 24 hours, the absorbing solution is extracted for analysis. The entire process must be carried out in complete darkness to prevent light interference and should be free from any vibrations or disturbances.

     

    Formaldehyde Measurement: Formaldehyde in the absorbing solution undergoes a color reaction with acetylacetone, and its concentration is determined using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 412 nm.

     

    AS/NZS 2098.11 Evaluation Criteria

    The formaldehyde concentration is calculated based on a pre-established calibration curve, and the final results are obtained.
