    Introduction to EN 647 Standard

    The EN 647 standard specifies the method for preparing hot water extracts from paper and board materials intended for food contact. This process simulates the water-based interaction under high-temperature conditions, allowing for the detection of extractable substances (such as heavy metals, organic compounds, etc.) that may migrate into food. The standard provides a unified basis for testing for manufacturers and regulatory authorities and plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of food packaging. By strictly controlling the levels of extractable substances in paper products, this standard helps reduce the risk of chemical migration and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.

     

     
     

    Scope of EN 647

    The EN 647 standard applies to paper and board materials that are in direct or indirect contact with food. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    Direct Contact:

    -Food packaging paper (e.g., hamburger wrapping paper, baking paper)

    -Paper cups, bowls, and food containers (especially for hot drinks or hot foods)

    -Tea bags, coffee filters

     

    Indirect Contact:

    -Cardboard liners (used for the transport of dry foods)

    -Food labels, base papers (e.g., pastry liners)

     

    Special Purpose:

    -Microwaveable paper products

    -Reusable paper food containers (where multiple extractions need to be evaluated)

     

     
     

    EN 647 Testing Method

    The sample is first shredded and then extracted in a water bath for 2 hours ± 5 minutes, with occasional shaking during the process. If necessary, the extract is filtered, and the resulting filtrate (hot water extract) is used for testing extractable substances. The specific testing steps are as follows:

    Sample Preparation: Shred the sample into small pieces (1-2cm²) using protective gloves. Weigh 10±0.1 grams and place it into a 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask. Add 200 ml of boiling water and seal the flask. Place the flask in a constant temperature water bath at 80±2°C for 2 hours ± 5 minutes, shaking occasionally. After extraction, pour out the solution and wash the sample twice with 80°C hot water.

     

    Extraction Process: Filter the extract using a No. 4 glass sintered filter (if necessary). Combine the filtered liquid with the wash solution and transfer to a 250 ml volumetric flask. Allow the solution to cool to 23±2°C, then dilute to the mark to obtain the hot water extract for further analysis. If sediment appears during subsequent testing, the solution must be reheated and stirred before sampling.

     

    Precautions: The experiment can be scaled up, but the maximum volume should not exceed twice the original volume. Ensure uniformity of the sample before testing, and if needed, conduct a second filtration of the extract.

     

    EN 647 Judgment Criteria
