JIS A 1460 Standard Overview
Formaldehyde, a common indoor pollutant, poses significant health risks, including respiratory diseases, allergic reactions, and even cancer with prolonged exposure. To effectively control formaldehyde contamination and ensure indoor air quality, JIS A 1460 focuses on determining formaldehyde emissions from building materials. It specifies the desiccator method for measuring formaldehyde release in building boards, providing a scientific, standardized, and operational basis for formaldehyde emission testing in construction and furniture materials. This standard is designed to ensure the environmental safety of building and furniture materials.
Scope of JIS A 1460
JIS A 1460 is applicable to various building materials, including but not limited to furniture materials. The standard primarily targets engineered wood products such as particleboard and plywood, and it is also applicable to construction paints (wall paints, wood coatings, etc.). However, it does not cover all types of decorative panels.
Testing Method for JIS A 1460
The desiccator method involves placing a sample in a desiccator containing 300 mL of water at 20°C ± 0.5°C. Formaldehyde is absorbed by the water and reacts with the Hantzsch reagent to form a colored compound. The formaldehyde concentration is measured using spectrophotometry. The specific steps are as follows:
Sample Preparation and Conditioning: Samples are cut from the board, avoiding the edges, and sized at 150 × 150 mm, with a total area of approximately 1800 cm². The samples are conditioned at 20°C and 65% relative humidity until they reach a constant weight. The distance between samples should be at least 25 mm to prevent formaldehyde absorption.
Test Apparatus Setup: A crystallizing dish containing 300 mL of distilled water is placed at the bottom of the desiccator. A stainless steel mesh and metal sample support are positioned above it, securing the sample. A blank desiccator (without a sample) is also used for monitoring the formaldehyde concentration during testing.

Test Conclusion: After the test, the solution in the crystallizing dish is mixed, and 100 mL of it is transferred into a sealed flask. If immediate measurement is not possible, the solution should be stored at 0-5°C for up to 30 hours.
Determination of Formaldehyde Content (JIS A 1460)
To measure the formaldehyde concentration, take 25 mL of acetylacetone-ammonium acetate solution and heat it in a 65°C ± 2°C water bath for 10 minutes. After cooling to room temperature, the absorbance is measured at 412 nm (or the actual wavelength if the maximum absorbance shifts) using a spectrophotometer, with water as the reference. This value determines the formaldehyde content.
