ASTM D1415 Standard Description
ASTM D1415 Standard Test Method for Rubber Property---International Hardness
ASTM D1415 Standard Introduction
ASTM D1415 is an important test method used to determine the International Rubber Hardness (IRHD) of rubber materials. This method enables the quantitative evaluation of rubber hardness characteristics and comparison of rubber materials with different formulations, ensuring consistency of rubber product performance. It is widely used in rubber product development, quality control and material selection, providing reliable data support for engineers and manufacturers to ensure products meet their intended application requirements.
ASTM D1415 Scope of Application
ASTM D1415 applies to thermoplastic rubber or vulcanized rubber specimens.
ASTM D1415 Test Method

Specimen Preparation: Lightly apply talc powder to the upper and lower surfaces of the specimen and place it on a horizontal rigid surface. Slowly lower the test foot onto the specimen surface to ensure uniform contact.
Initial Loading: Apply a small force to the indenter and maintain it for 5 seconds. Then adjust the instrument reading to 100 IRHD as the reference position.
Main Loading and Measurement: After initial loading, apply the main load and maintain it for 30 seconds. The hardness value corresponding to the indentation depth is then recorded. For standard instruments, the IRHD value can be read directly. For micro instruments, the reading shall be multiplied by 6 and converted to IRHD using the standard conversion table.
Multiple Measurements and Results: Measure at 3 to 5 different locations on the specimen. The median value of the measurements is taken and rounded to obtain the final IRHD hardness value.
ASTM D1415 Evaluation Criteria
According to ASTM D1415, hardness is expressed as International Rubber Hardness Degrees (IRHD).
