    ASTM D2583 Standard Description

ASTM D2583 Standard Test Method for Indentation Hardness of Rigid Plastics by Means of a Barcol Impressor

    ASTM D2583 Standard Introduction

Plastic hardness is an important engineering parameter for building electrical products, consumer goods and industrial components. Harder materials may cause wear or scratches on softer materials. ASTM D2583, also known as the Barcol hardness test, is used to determine the indentation hardness of rigid plastics. It is widely applied in industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine and construction, helping engineers evaluate the quality and performance of plastic materials.

    ASTM D2583 Scope of Application

ASTM D2583 is primarily applicable to the hardness determination of reinforced and unreinforced rigid plastics.

    ASTM D2583 Test Method

Representative specimens of rigid plastic materials shall be flat plates or blocks with sufficient thickness to allow measurement using a Barcol Impressor. The minimum specimen thickness shall be 0.25 inches, and the minimum width and length shall be 2 inches. Place the specimen under the indenter of the Barcol Impressor and apply pressure uniformly until the dial indicator reaches its maximum reading. The indentation depth is then converted into an absolute Barcol hardness value.

ASTM D2583 is essential for determining the surface hardness of rigid plastics and composite materials, particularly in industries such as aerospace and automotive. It ensures that materials have sufficient toughness, wear resistance and long-term performance to meet safety and quality requirements.
