ASTM D790 Standard Test Methods for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials

    Category:

    Mechanical

    ASTM D790 Standard Description

ASTM D790 Standard Test Methods for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials

    ASTM D790 Standard Introduction

In product development and quality control, the flexural strength of materials is a key indicator of durability and reliability. Materials used in products such as automotive bumpers, mobile phone housings and circuit board substrates must have sufficient flexural strength. ASTM D790 is a standard test method for determining the flexural properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastics and electrical insulating materials. ASTM D790 includes two test procedures:

Procedure A: Applicable to high-modulus materials.

Procedure B: Applicable to low-modulus materials where deflection may exceed 5%.

    ASTM D790 Scope of Application

ASTM D790 applies to the flexural property testing of various plastics and composite materials, and is commonly used for engineering plastics, general-purpose plastics and reinforced plastic products.

    ASTM D790 Sample Preparation

Typical specimen dimensions according to ASTM D790:

    Length: 127 mm

    Width: 12.7 mm

    Thickness: 3.2 mm

Support span length (determined based on specimen thickness using the following formula): Support span = thickness × 16 (applicable to Procedure A)

    ASTM D790 Test Method

ASTM D790 uses a three-point bending test method. The procedure is as follows:

◎Place the specimen on two lower supports.

◎Position the loading nose directly above the center point.

◎Start the test at the specified crosshead speed.

◎Continuously record the load and deflection.

◎Terminate the test at specimen failure or when 5% strain is reached.

Note: The crosshead speed depends on the support span and material stiffness. The calculation formula is as follows:

    For Procedure A, Z = 0.01 mm/min

    For Procedure B, Z = 0.10 mm/min

    ASTM D790 Evaluation Criteria

The following flexural properties are calculated: Flexural stress, flexural strain and flexural modulus.
