ISO 37 Standard Overview
ISO 37 is widely used across various industries to determine the tensile stress-strain properties of vulcanized rubber and thermoplastic rubber. It is similar to ASTM D412 but not equivalent. Most companies select one of these standards based on their location and market requirements. ISO 37 is commonly used by companies involved in raw material manufacturing, elastomer technology development, and the production of rubber-based consumer products and medical products such as rubber gloves. ISO 37 is also widely used in the energy and automotive industries, especially by tire manufacturers.

ISO 37 covers tensile property testing of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubber materials.
ISO 37 Test Grip Types
Pneumatic Grips
Pneumatic grips are particularly useful for handling various materials. The gripping force is generated directly by a pneumatic cylinder acting on the jaws or through a lever mechanism.

Wedge Grips
Wedge grips are commonly used for tensile testing of metallic materials. The specimen is pulled further into the narrow section of the wedge, increasing the gripping pressure.

Eccentric Roller Grips
Easy to operate and self-tightening, suitable for soft and elastic specimens, films, plastics, rubber and similar materials.
ISO 37 Test Method

Standard dumbbell or ring-shaped specimens are stretched at a constant rate in a tensile testing machine. During the test, the force and elongation of the specimen are continuously recorded until rupture. The specific test methods for dumbbell and ring-shaped specimens are as follows:
(1) Dumbbell-Shaped Specimen
After conditioning, the specimen is mounted in the specified grips and loaded at the constant rate specified by the standard. The force and deformation are continuously monitored until rupture or the predetermined strain endpoint is reached. Key performance parameters are then calculated and any abnormal observations are recorded.

(2) Ring-Shaped Specimen
During testing, the pulley spacing is adjusted according to the requirements (30 mm for Type A rings and 5.5 mm for Type B rings). After zeroing the load, the specimen is installed. The equipment then stretches the specimen at the specified speed (500 mm/min for Type A and 100 mm/min for Type B), while continuously monitoring pulley spacing and stress changes until completion of the test.

The following properties are recorded and calculated:
• Tensile strength
• Elongation at break
• Stress at a given elongation
• Elongation at a given stress
• Yield stress
• Yield elongation
