What is a toddler bed?
A toddler bed is any bed that accommodates a full‑size infant mattress (minimum 51⅝ in × 27¼ in) and provides unobstructed access for children at least 15 months old and weighing ≤50 lb (27.7 kg).
What is the purpose of the toddler bed standard?
This standard reduces the risk of young children becoming trapped in bed‑end structures, between guardrails and side rails, or in mattress support systems – entanglement that can lead to suffocation. It also addresses protruding corner posts that may catch pacifier cords, straps, necklaces, or clothing.

What are the requirements under 16 CFR 1217?
The standard imposes stringent requirements on structural integrity and operational safety, including mattress support, guardrails and side‑rail interlocks, spindle/slide‑board interlocks, partially restrictive openings, and warning labels/instructions.
Additional CPSIA requirements for toddler beds
Toddler beds must comply with CPSIA requirements on:
1.Lead content limit. Total lead in any accessible component shall not exceed 100 ppm.
2.Phthalate content restrictions. Plasticized components shall not contain more than 0.1% of any of the eight restricted phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIBP, DPENP, DHEXP, DCHP).
3.CPC certificate for infant beds. Must be tested by a CPSC‑accredited third‑party lab; based on testing, the domestic manufacturer or importer must issue a Children’s Product Certificate specifying each applicable regulation.
4.Product and outer packaging labeling requirements. Durable infant/toddler products must bear permanent traceability labels on the product and packaging, plus supplementary markings and a product registration card.
