What is a play yard?
A play yard is a framed enclosure with mesh or side panels, intended for travel, home, or yard use, providing a safe sleep/play space for children unable to climb out (height < 35 in / 890 mm). It resembles non‑full‑size cribs but has non‑rigid side panels, with internal length > 55 in or < 49¾ in, or internal width > 30⅝ in or < 25⅜ in (or both). Inflatable play areas are excluded.
What is the purpose of the play yard standard?
This standard prevents death or injury from falls, entrapment, suffocation, or escape due to component failure, displacement, or improper assembly of play yards and their accessories.

What are the requirements for play yards?
Key requirements cover:
Latch/locking mechanisms – ensure proper function and prevent unintended folding.
Top rail strength, configuration, and attachment – prevent fracture or detachment that could cause cuts, strangulation, entrapment, falls, or escape obstruction.
Side height – limits a child’s ability to climb out.
Mesh/fabric side deflection and strength – prevent tearing that could lead to entrapment, strangulation, falls, or escape.
Floor strength – prevent cracking or deformation that could cause jamming, falls, or escape obstruction.
Mattress vertical displacement – prevent children from lifting the mattress, which could cause entrapment and suffocation.
Accessory testing – covers items such as toys and changing tables, with emphasis on hazards from improper assembly.
Labeling – addresses falls, soft bedding suffocation, and cord strangulation hazards.
Play yards with a bassinet attachment must meet both play yard and bassinet requirements. Play yards differ from non‑full‑size cribs by having non‑rigid side panels.
What type of mattress should be used in a play yard?
Instructions must specify using only the mattress provided with the play yard to prevent head entrapment and suffocation between the mattress, sides, and floor. CPSC advises against supplemental mattresses, which can create hazardous gaps.
Additional CPSIA requirements for play yards
Play yards must comply with:
1.Surface coating – paint shall not contain more than 0.009% lead.
2.Lead content – total lead in any accessible part shall not exceed 100 ppm.
3.Phthalates – plasticized components shall not contain more than 0.1% of any of the eight restricted phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIBP, DPENP, DHEXP, DCHP).
4.Testing and certification – must be tested by a CPSC‑accredited third‑party lab; based on testing, the domestic manufacturer or importer must issue a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC).
5.Labeling – durable infant/toddler products must bear permanent traceability labels on the product and packaging, plus supplementary markings and a product registration card.
Play yards offer significant convenience for caregivers, but safety hazards or quality defects can lead to serious infant injuries or fatalities, making rigorous compliance critical. SATIFY provides comprehensive testing and evaluation services under 16 CFR Part 1221.
