GB/T 8939 Standard Description
GB/T 8939 Sanitary absorbent pads (panty liner)
GB/T 8939 Standard Introduction
GB/T 8939 is a recommended national standard in China formulated for sanitary napkins used during women’s menstrual periods. It applies to the design, production, inspection and sales of various sanitary napkins and panty liners. The standard emphasizes product absorption efficiency, safety and comfort, providing important technical support for improving the quality of feminine hygiene products and protecting user health. GB 15979 Hygienic Requirements for Disposable Sanitary Products, the mandatory national standard, specifies GB/T 8939 as one of the normative referenced standards and uses it for the determination of parameters such as pH value and extractable fluorescent whitening substances.
GB/T 8939 Scope of Application
GB/T 8939 applies to sanitary napkins and panty liners composed of a top layer, absorbent core layer (containing fluff pulp and/or super absorbent polymer) and leak-proof bottom film, which are manufactured through specialized processing equipment for female use.

GB/T 8939 Other requirements
Hygiene Requirements: Shall comply with the requirements of GB 15979.
Raw Materials: Waste or recycled materials shall not be used. Products shall be clean and free from contamination and foreign matter.
◎ Fluff pulp shall comply with GB/T 21331.
◎ Super absorbent polymer shall comply with GB/T 22875.
◎ Release paper shall comply with GB/T 27731.
◎ Absorbent tissue paper shall comply with QB/T 4508.
◎ Dry-laid paper shall comply with GB/T 24292.
◎ Top layer materials shall comply with GB/T 30133.
Packaging: Each piece shall be individually packaged. Packaging materials directly contacting the product shall not use waste or recycled raw materials.
Sealing: Both ends shall be firmly sealed and shall not break during use.
Usage Performance: During normal use, the product shall not shift, shall not damage underwear when peeled off, and shall leave no obvious residue.
Release Paper: The release paper shall not fall off by itself and shall be able to be completely removed naturally.
GB/T 8939 Test method
Overall Length Deviation: The overall length of the specimen is measured using a ruler (measured at the longest part of the specimen) with an accuracy of 1 mm. Six specimens are tested, and the deviation percentage between the average value and the labeled value is calculated.
Weight Deviation per Piece: The weight of six sanitary napkin specimens of the same specification is measured, and the relative deviation between the maximum value, minimum value and average value is calculated.
Absorption Capacity: One specimen is weighed after absorbing liquid, and the ratio between the absorbed weight and dry weight is calculated to determine the absorption capacity, reflecting the product’s liquid absorption performance.
Absorption Speed: The absorption performance is evaluated by determining whether the absorption speed meets the specified requirements, usually based on the time required for liquid penetration.
pH Value: The pH value of the water extract from the specimen is tested to evaluate the chemical stability of the product and its potential skin irritation.
Moisture Content at Delivery (Determined according to GB/T 462): The moisture content of the specimen is measured by weighing before and after drying, and shall be controlled within the permitted range (generally not exceeding 10%).
Formaldehyde Content (Determined according to GB/T 34448): The acetylacetone-visible spectrophotometric method is used to determine residual formaldehyde content in paper products to ensure product safety.
Extractable Fluorescent Substances: The test determines whether fluorescent whitening agents are released from the product during use and evaluates product safety.
Back Adhesive Peel Strength: Used to evaluate the peel strength of adhesive parts (such as the back adhesive of sanitary napkins), which affects adhesion performance.
Hygiene Indicators (Determined according to GB 15979): Microbial indicators, including total bacterial count and pathogenic microorganisms, are evaluated according to relevant national hygiene standards.
