    Introduction to FCC Part 18

    FCC Part 18, also known as 47 CFR Part 18 of the U.S. FCC regulations, specifies the electromagnetic interference requirements for Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) radio-frequency equipment, including conducted and radiated emissions. This regulation applies to ISM devices and controls their emitted electromagnetic energy to prevent harmful interference with authorized wireless communication services.

     

     

    FCC Part 18 Applicable Products - Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) Equipment:

    Devices or apparatus designed to generate and use local radio-frequency energy for industrial, scientific, medical, domestic, or similar purposes, excluding applications in the telecommunications field. Typical ISM applications produce physical, biological, or chemical effects, such as heating, gas ionization, mechanical vibration, hair removal, and charged particle acceleration. ISM equipment includes: industrial heating equipment (for example, radio-frequency welders and radio-frequency lighting equipment), medical diathermy equipment, ultrasonic equipment, consumer ISM equipment (for example, household microwave ovens, jewelry cleaners, and ultrasonic humidifiers), magnetic resonance imaging equipment, etc.(Note: FCC Part 18 products use the FCC certification method.)

    Prohibited frequency band

    Operation of ISM equipment is prohibited in the following safety, search, and rescue frequency bands:

    490-510 kHz, 2170-2194 kHz, 8354-8374 kHz, 121.4-121.6 MHz, 156.7-156.9 MHz, and 242.8-243.2 MHz.

     

    ISM device RE (Radiated Emission) limits:

    ISM devices are permitted to radiate unlimited energy within the designated frequency bands mentioned above; outside these bands, they must comply with the limits specified in the table below.

    1The field strength at 11,600 m shall not exceed 10 μV/m. Consumer equipment operating below 1000 MHz shall not increase the field strength; otherwise, power levels exceeding 500 W are permitted.

    2 Minimize as much as possible.

    3 The field strength at 1,600 m shall not exceed 10 μV/m. Consumer equipment shall not increase the field strength; otherwise, power levels exceeding 500 W are permitted.

    4 Electric furnaces manufactured before February 1, 1980 shall comply with the field strength limits for miscellaneous ISM equipment.
