Category:
Electrical Wires
IEC 60332-1-2 Standard Overview
IEC 60332-1-2 Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions - Part 1-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable - Procedure for 1 kW pre-mixed flame
IEC 60332-1-2 Standard Introduction
EN 60332-1-2 evaluates the fire performance of cables based on flame propagation characteristics and serves as a basis for the European fire classification system (such as Aca, B1ca, B2ca, Cca, Dca, and Eca).
Under the European Union Construction Products Regulation (CPR), construction products are required to bear the CE marking. Cable products shall be tested according to EN 50575 to obtain CE certification. EN 60332-1-2 is an important part of EN 50575 for evaluating the fire performance of wires and cables and plays an essential role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of electrical systems.

IEC 60332-1-2 Scope of Application
Power Cables:Insulated conductors and cables used for power supply and other electrical applications.
Control and Communication Cables:Metallic conductor cables, symmetrical cables, and coaxial cables used for telecommunications, data transmission, radio frequency applications, video communication, signal transmission, and control equipment.
Optical Fibre Cables:Used for telecommunications, data transmission, radio frequency applications, video communication, signal transmission, and control equipment.

IEC 60332-1-2 Test Device Instructions
(1) Metal Cover
A metal enclosure with a height of (1200 ± 25) mm, a width of (300 ± 25) mm, and a depth of (450 ± 25) mm, open at the front and closed at the top and bottom.
(2) Ignition Source
The ignition source shall comply with the relevant standards, and the test flame shall be verified before testing.
(3) Test Chamber
The metal enclosure and ignition source shall be placed in a suitable test chamber. During the test, the chamber shall not be ventilated but shall be equipped with a device capable of removing harmful gases generated during combustion. The test chamber temperature shall be maintained at (23 ± 10) °C.
IEC 60332-1-2 Test Method

1. Prepare a 600 mm single cable specimen and position it vertically.
2. Open the propane gas supply and air pump, then adjust the propane and air flow rates to meet the requirements of IEC 60332-1.
3. Ignite the specimen and measure the flame length using the flame height gauge and the total flame length to ensure that the flame meets the requirements of IEC 60332-1.
4. Place the single cable specimen in the test apparatus on two horizontal supports with a spacing of 550 mm.
5. Apply the flame to the cable specimen for 60 seconds.
6. After the flame on the specimen is extinguished, start the exhaust fan to remove combustion gases from the chamber.
7. Measure the charred and burned length between the measurement reference point and the lower edge of the upper support bracket.
IEC 60332-1-2 Basis for determination
The measurements include the distance between the lower edge of the upper support bracket and the upper and lower limits of the charred section.
Note: To determine the starting point of the charred section, use a sharp object, such as a knife blade, to gently press the cable surface. The point where the elastic surface changes into a brittle and powdery texture is considered the beginning of the charred section.
