    IEC 60332-1-3 Standard Introduction

    Electrical wires and cables are essential components of modern society, providing power transmission and information communication in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. However, under certain conditions, cables may ignite during use, resulting in safety risks and environmental hazards.

    IEC 60332-1-3 specifies a test method for determining flaming droplets and particles generated from burning electrical wires and cables. By observing the behavior of droplets produced during combustion, the standard evaluates the fire performance of cables and helps improve the safety and reliability of electrical wiring systems, thereby protecting lives and property.

     

     

    IEC 60332-1-3 Scope of Application

    Applicable to various power cables, optical fibre cables, and control and communication cables.

     

     

    IEC 60332-1-3 Description of the Experimental Setup

    (1) Metal Cover

    A metal enclosure with a height of (1200 ± 25) mm, a width of (300 ± 25) mm, and a depth of (450 ± 25) mm, open at the front and closed at the top and bottom.

    (2) Ignition Source

    The ignition source shall comply with the relevant standards, and the test flame shall be verified before testing.

    (3) Test Chamber

    The metal enclosure and ignition source shall be placed in a suitable test chamber. The chamber shall not be ventilated during the test but shall be equipped with a device capable of removing harmful gases generated during combustion.

    The test chamber temperature shall be maintained at (23 ± 10) °C.

     

     

    (4) Filter Paper
    - Undyed fibre filter paper with a basis weight of (80 ± 15) g/m² and an ash content of less than 0.1% shall be used.
    - The filter paper shall be conditioned for at least 4 hours under conditions of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 10)% relative humidity.

     

    IEC 60332-1-3 Test Method

    (1) Sample Preparation:

    A wire, cable, or optical fibre specimen with a length of (600 ± 25) mm shall be conditioned at (23 ± 5) °C and (50 ± 20)% relative humidity for at least 16 hours.

    Note: If the specimen surface is coated with paint or varnish, the test specimen shall be conditioned at (60 ± 2) °C for 4 hours.

    (2) Specimen Installation:

    1. Sample Calibration:

    - The specimen shall be straightened and secured between two horizontal supports using suitable copper wire.
    - The specimen shall be positioned vertically at the center of the metal enclosure. The distance between the lower edge of the upper support and the upper edge of the lower support shall be (550 ± 5) mm.
    - The lower end of the specimen shall be positioned approximately 50 mm above the bottom of the metal enclosure.
    - The vertical axis of the specimen shall align with the center of the metal enclosure.

    2. Placement of filter paper:

    - Within 3 minutes before the start of the test, two pieces of filter paper, each measuring (300 ± 10) mm × (300 ± 10) mm, shall be placed overlapping on the bottom surface of the metal enclosure. The filter paper shall be positioned centrally beneath the test specimen.

    (3) Burner

    - Ignite the burner so that the tip of the blue flame directly contacts the specimen surface. The contact point shall be 475 ± 5 mm below the lower edge of the upper horizontal support.
    - The burner shall be inclined at an angle of (45 ± 2)° to the vertical axis of the specimen.
    - During the entire flame application period, the burner shall remain fixed in position. The flame application times are as follows:

     

     

    IEC 60332-1-3 Basis for determination

    During the test, the following conditions shall be observed and recorded:

    - Whether the filter paper is ignited.
    - If ignition of the filter paper occurs, record the time from ignition until combustion stops.
