IEC 60332-2-2 Vertical Flame Propagation Test for Single Wires or Cables: Spread of Flame Procedure
Category:
Electrical Wires
IEC 60332-2-2 Standard Description
IEC 60332-2-2 Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions - Part 2-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single small insulated wire or cable - Procedure for diffusion flame
IEC 60332-2-2 Standard Introduction
The IEC 60332-2-2 test is part of the IEC 60332 series and is primarily used to determine the vertical flame propagation characteristics of single small insulated wires and cables. By conducting IEC 60332-2-2 testing, manufacturers and regulatory authorities can verify whether cables comply with specified fire safety requirements, thereby reducing the risk of fire spread in buildings and facilities.

IEC 60332-1-3 Scope of Application
Applicable to various power cables, optical fibre cables, and control and communication cables.

IEC 60332-2-2 Sample Preparation
A wire, cable, or optical fibre specimen with a length of (600 ± 25) mm shall be conditioned at (23 ± 5) °C and (50 ± 20)% relative humidity for at least 16 hours.
Note: If the specimen surface is coated with paint or varnish, the test specimen shall be conditioned at (60 ± 2) °C for 4 hours.
IEC 60332-2-2 Test Method
(1) Sample Preparation:
Sample Type |
Metallic conductor cable specimen |
Optical cable specimen |
Specimen Installation |
The sample is vertically fixed in the middle of the metal shield using a metal wire. |
The specimen is secured to two horizontal supports with metal wire. |
A force of 5 N/mm is applied to the lower portion of the specimen. 2 The load of |
- |
The distance from the load‑specimen connection point to the lower edge of the upper support shall be (550 ± 5) mm. |
The distance between the lower edge of the upper bracket and the upper edge of the lower bracket of the two horizontal supports for the fixed specimen shall be (550 ± 5) mm. |
- |
The distance between the lower edge of the upper bracket and the upper edge of the lower bracket of the two horizontal supports for the fixed specimen shall be (550 ± 5) mm. |
The specimen axis shall be perpendicular and positioned at the center of the metal enclosure, i.e., 150 mm from each side face and 225 mm from the rear face. |

(2) Blowtorch position
Sample Type |
Metallic conductor cable specimen |
Optical cable specimen |
Specimen Installation |
The angle between the centerline of the blowtorch and the centerline of the specimen is (45±2)°. |
The horizontal distance between the centerline of the blowtorch nozzle and the specimen shall be (10 ± 1) mm. |
The intersection of the centerline of the blowtorch and the centerline of the specimen, under an applied load of 5 N/mm². |
- |
The distance between the intersection of the torch’s centerline and the specimen’s centerline and the applied load shall be (100 ± 10) mm. |
The distance between the intersection of the torch’s centerline and the specimen’s centerline and the upper surface of the lower support shall be (100 ± 10) mm. |
The distance between the intersection of the blowtorch’s centerline and the specimen’s centerline and the lower edge of the upper support shall not exceed 465 mm. |
The flame shall envelop the specimen. |
(3) Ignition Time
The flame shall be applied to both metallic conductor cable specimens and optical fibre cable specimens for (20 ± 1) seconds.
(4) Post-Test Cleaning
After all combustion has ceased, wipe the specimen. If the original surface remains intact, removable soot and softening or deformation of non-metallic materials may be disregarded.
IEC 60332-2-2 Basis for determination
- Measure the distance between the lower edge of the upper support and the upper and lower boundaries of the charred section.
- To determine the starting point of the charred section, press the cable surface gently with a sharp object (such as a knife blade). The point where the elastic surface becomes brittle and powdery is considered the beginning of the charred section.
