AS/NZS 4602.1 Standard Introduction
High-visibility clothing is a mandatory safety requirement in highways, railways, and other similar high-risk industries.Such clothing is designed for personnel who need to remain visible over long distances, against complex backgrounds, and under conditions where visibility may be reduced.AS/NZS 4602.1 defines the harsh environmental conditions that workwear may be exposed to and specifies construction requirements for high-visibility clothing.Construction refers to the overall garment design. For workwear, this specifically includes the arrangement and proportion of two safety-rated materials: fluorescent materials and retroreflective materials.

AS/NZS 4602.1 Important Definitions
Fluorescent Material
Fluorescent materials enhance visibility by increasing the reflection and emission of visible light through dyeing or pigmentation, thereby improving color contrast and recognition.Fluorescent colors are generally suitable for synthetic fibers and are not suitable for natural fibers such as cotton.
Retroreflective Material
Retroreflective materials reflect incident light back toward its original source, allowing observers to identify the wearer more clearly.
AS/NZS 4602.1 High-Visibility Clothing Categories
Class D: Suitable for daytime use.
Class N: Uses retroreflective materials for nighttime visibility.
Class D/N: Suitable for both daytime and nighttime use.
AS/NZS 4602.1 High-Risk Application Protective Clothing — Class D
The front and back chest areas shall each include at least 0.2 m² of continuous high-visibility fabric covering the specified area. This area shall not be interrupted or covered by design elements such as identification card holders.Trademarks, text, and pockets are permitted, provided that they do not reduce the required high-visibility area below 0.2 m².
If underarm breathable mesh does not comply with the color requirements of AS/NZS 1906.4, its area shall not be included in the calculation.Garment materials shall comply with the requirements for Class F and Class NF fluorescent materials specified in AS/NZS 1906.4.
Special note: Class D clothing is not recommended for nighttime use. Fluorescent materials generally do not provide retroreflection under artificial lighting conditions. Therefore, relevant warnings shall be clearly indicated on product labels.
AS/NZS 4602.1 High-Risk Application Protective Clothing — Class N
Class N high-risk application protective clothing is specifically designed for nighttime use, suitable for environments where natural light is replaced by artificial lighting, such as warehouse lighting or vehicle headlights.Unlike Class D, Class N clothing does not require fluorescent high-visibility materials. White, pink, or light blue materials may be used.
Its visibility performance mainly depends on retroreflective materials (reflective tapes), which return artificial light to its source to improve recognition.Key requirements include:
◎ Retroreflective tape shall cover the specified visibility areas of the garment according to the standard-required layouts, including biological motion pattern, double ring pattern, H pattern (front and back), and X-back pattern, ensuring effective nighttime recognition.
◎ Since Class N garments do not contain Class F or Class NF fluorescent materials, they shall not be used during daytime conditions.
◎ Class N materials rely on retroreflective technology for nighttime visibility, while Class D relies on fluorescent materials for daytime visibility. The two classifications cannot be substituted for each other.
AS/NZS 4602.1 High-Risk Application Protective Clothing — Class D/N
Class D/N high-risk application protective clothing is designed for both daytime and nighttime environments, combining daytime high visibility with nighttime retroreflective performance.The front chest and back areas shall each contain at least 0.2 m² of continuous high-visibility fabric complying with AS/NZS 1906.4 Class F requirements.Class NF fabrics may also be used; however, visibility performance may be slightly reduced, and specific care instructions shall be followed. If Class NF materials are selected, visibility performance shall be balanced with proper maintenance requirements.Class D/N clothing shall also be equipped with Class R or Class RF retroreflective tape to ensure effective light reflection during nighttime use.
Class D/N protective clothing provides all-day protection by relying on fluorescent materials during daytime and retroreflective materials during nighttime.
