EN 1150 Standard Introduction
EN 1150 specifies the test methods and requirements for high-visibility protective clothing intended for non-professional use.Such clothing is designed to visually indicate the wearer’s presence under various conditions, including daylight, darkness under vehicle headlights or searchlight illumination, and urban street lighting environments.This standard does not apply to accessories that are normally attached to clothing.
EN 1150 Scope of Application
EN 1150 is applicable to high-visibility protective clothing for non-professional use.
EN 1150 Design Requirements
Garments shall incorporate background materials and retroreflective materials covering the specified areas, or use combined-performance materials. When combined-performance materials are used, the required area of background material may be reduced accordingly.Further design requirements are as follows:
(1) Background Material:
◎ The total area of the background material may consist of small pieces of materials in different colors. The colors shall comply with the requirements specified in Table 2.

◎ The material shall be evenly distributed around the body, with a minimum width of not less than 50 mm.
◎ Any openings used for fastening shall not exceed 50 mm in width, and the total width of openings in the same area shall not exceed 100 mm.
◎ It is recommended that the background material be continuously and evenly distributed at chest height to achieve 360° visibility.
(2) Retroreflective Material:
◎ Retroreflective materials shall be evenly distributed on the covered body areas.
◎ The material may include shapes, logos, or other design elements. Each individual element shall have an area of not less than 25 cm² and a width of not less than 25 mm.
◎ If the garment has sleeves, the retroreflective material shall cover the outer arm area or form a continuous band around the arm, equivalent to a strip material with a width of 25 mm.
(3) Combined Performance Materials
Depending on the intended application, the design requirements for background materials or retroreflective materials shall be met.
EN 1150 Test Method
Before testing, specimens shall be conditioned at (20 ± 2)°C and (65 ± 5)% relative humidity for at least 24 hours.If testing is conducted under other conditions, the tests shall begin within 5 minutes after removing the specimens from the conditioning environment.
(1) Color Measurement
Color measurement shall be performed according to CIE 15.2, using a D65 standard illuminant and 45/0 geometry, evaluated according to the CIE 2° standard observer.The specimen shall be placed on a black background, and the luminance factor of the background shall not exceed 0.04.
(2) Method for Determining Retroreflective Photometric Performance
The retroreflection coefficient R′ shall be determined according to CIE 54:1982.Testing shall be conducted using a 100 mm × 100 mm square specimen or a specimen with the same dimensions after pretreatment.Measurements shall be performed at two rotation angles (ε = 0° and 90°), with an observation angle of 12′ and an entrance angle of 5°.The reference position shall be determined according to the marking on the specimen or the manufacturer’s instructions. If no marking or instructions are available, the position may be selected randomly.
(3) Retroreflective Performance After Exposure
Abrasion Resistance:The specimen shall be tested using the specified wool fabric friction material. After 5,000 friction cycles, the retroreflective performance shall be measured.
Flexural Resistance:After pretreatment, the specimen shall undergo a flexural test for 7,500 cycles.
Low-Temperature Folding:The specimen shall be subjected to a folding test at (-20 ± 1)°C according to ISO 4675. After testing, the specimen shall be conditioned according to Clause 7.1 for at least 2 hours before measurement.
Resistance to Temperature Changes:A specimen measuring 180 mm × 30 mm shall be continuously exposed to alternating temperature conditions, including 12 hours at (50 ± 2)°C followed by 20 hours at (-30 ± 2)°C.After completion of the test, the specimen shall be conditioned according to Clause 7.1 for at least 2 hours before evaluation.
(4) Retroreflective Performance After Washing and Dry Cleaning
General Requirements:The appropriate test method shall be selected according to the care instructions provided on the garment label.If the label indicates that the garment is washable, a washing test shall be conducted. If the label indicates that the garment is suitable for dry cleaning, a dry-cleaning test shall be performed. If both washing and dry cleaning are specified, both tests shall be carried out separately using different specimens.
Washing Test:Three fabric specimens measuring 300 mm × 250 mm shall be prepared, with two seams positioned along the center line. Retroreflective material strips measuring 250 mm × 50 mm shall be attached with a spacing of 50 mm.The specimens shall be washed according to the specified requirements. After the final washing cycle, the specimens shall be dried without stress at (50 ± 5)°C.
Dry Cleaning Test:Specimens shall be prepared according to EN ISO 3175 and dry cleaned according to the specified procedure. The number of cleaning cycles shall be determined according to the garment label or applicable standards.The preparation of test specimens shall follow the same procedure as the washing test.
