Overview of ISO 12460-5
Excessive formaldehyde emissions can irritate the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. ISO 12460-5 focuses on wood-based panels, such as particleboard, fiberboard, plywood, and other non-laminated, non-coated products. This standard specifies the use of the perforator extraction method to measure formaldehyde content, which is essential for ensuring indoor air quality and promoting consumer health. It also contributes to advancing the wood products industry towards more environmentally friendly and low-formaldehyde materials.

Scope of ISO 12460-5
ISO 12460-5 applies to the testing of formaldehyde emissions in wood-based panels and their products, including:
◎Particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), high-density fiberboard (HDF), plywood, and blockboard.
◎Furniture components, interior decorative materials (such as flooring, wall panels), and construction panels made from these wood-based materials.
Testing Method for ISO 12460-5
Formaldehyde is extracted from the sample using boiling toluene. The extracted formaldehyde is transferred into distilled or deionized water, and the formaldehyde content is determined using the acetylacetone spectrophotometric method (Hantzsch reaction), with absorbance measured at a wavelength of 412 nm. The testing method is as follows:
◎Sample Preparation and Moisture Content Determination
Select approximately 500g of 25mm × 25mm samples, following the ISO 16999 sampling standard. Weigh four samples and dry them in an oven at 103°C until they reach a constant weight to determine the moisture content. For production control, testing must be completed within 72 hours. For installed panels, sampling conditions should be agreed upon in advance.
◎Formaldehyde Extraction
Weigh a 110g sample and place it into a flask containing 600mL of toluene. Assemble the perforation extraction apparatus. Maintain the toluene reflux rate between 70-90 drops per minute and heat the mixture for 120 ± 5 minutes. Transfer the extracted solution to a 2000mL volumetric flask and adjust the volume to the mark.

◎Formaldehyde Determination
Take 10mL of the extract and add acetylacetone and ammonium acetate solution. Perform color development in a 60°C water bath for 10 minutes. Measure the absorbance at a wavelength of 412nm and calculate the formaldehyde content using a calibration curve. The calibration curve must be verified weekly.
◎Result Calculation
Calculate the formaldehyde content based on the average of two parallel tests. If the deviation exceeds 20%, the test must be repeated.
◎Important Notes
Strictly control the reflux rate and extraction time, and protect the color development from light exposure. The report must specify the condition of the board and the test conditions. This method is suitable for production control, while actual formaldehyde release should be evaluated in conjunction with the climate chamber method.
