    ISO 12460-3 Standard Introduction

    Wood-based panels are essential materials used in furniture manufacturing. They may contain resins, paints, and coatings that release highly harmful volatile compounds, such as formaldehyde. To evaluate and regulate the safety of furniture products in international import and export markets, formaldehyde testing of wood-based panels is of great importance. ISO 12460-3 determines formaldehyde emission through the gas analysis method.

     

     
     

    ISO 12460-3 Scope of Application

    ISO 12460-3 is applicable to solid wood panels, plywood, coated particleboard, frame boards, foil, edge banding, and melamine foil.

     

     
     

    ISO 12460-3 Test Method

    A test specimen with a known surface area is placed in a sealed chamber, where temperature, humidity, airflow, and pressure are maintained at specified conditions. After the formaldehyde released from the specimen mixes with the air inside the chamber, the air is continuously extracted from the chamber and passed through an aqueous gas-washing bottle, where the released formaldehyde is absorbed. At the end of the test, the formaldehyde concentration is determined by spectrophotometry. The formaldehyde emission rate is calculated based on the measured concentration, sampling duration, and exposed surface area of the specimen, and the result is expressed in milligrams per square meter per hour.

     

     
     

    ISO 12460-3 Test Room Requirements

    Throughout the entire testing process, the temperature, humidity, airflow, and air pressure of the test chamber shall meet the following requirements:

    Temperature: 60 ± 0.5 °C

    Humidity: ≤ 3%

    Airflow: 60 ± 3 L/h

    Atmospheric pressure: 1–1.2 kPa higher than the surrounding air pressure
