ISO 2039-2 Standard Introduction
ISO 2039-2 determines the hardness of plastics using the Rockwell hardness method. It uses M, L and R scales to provide a direct evaluation of a material’s resistance to indentation. The standard provides a consistent basis for material development, quality control and comparison. The Rockwell hardness value is directly related to the indentation resistance of plastic materials. A higher value indicates a harder material.
ISO 2039-2 Scope of Application
ISO 2039-2 is particularly applicable for evaluating the hardness of plastics, filled or modified plastics, and related plastic products.
ISO 2039-2 Test Method
ISO 2039-2 determines hardness by applying a constant minor load to a steel ball placed on the test material, followed by applying a major load. The Rockwell hardness value is then calculated according to the specified relationship. The test procedure is as follows:
Selection of Hardness Scale: Select the appropriate Rockwell hardness scale according to the material characteristics.

Check Load and Indenter: Confirm that the major load, minor load and indenter diameter correspond to the selected Rockwell hardness scale. Discard the first reading after replacing the ball indenter.
Specimen Placement and Load Application: Place the specimen on the test platform and ensure that the surface and indenter are free from dust, oil contamination and oxide scale. Apply the minor load first and set the dial to zero. Apply the major load within 10 seconds, maintain it for 15 seconds, then remove the major load. Avoid impact or shock to the instrument during operation. Read the hardness value 15 seconds after removing the major load.
Multiple Measurement Requirements: Perform five measurements on the same surface of the specimen. Each measurement point shall be at least 10 mm from the specimen edge, and the distance between two measurement points shall be no less than 10 mm to avoid mutual interference.
Acceptable Hardness Range: The ideal Rockwell hardness value should be within the range of 50–115. Results outside this range may be inaccurate, and a more appropriate hardness scale should be selected for retesting.
ISO 2039-2 Evaluation Criteria
The Rockwell hardness value is calculated using the following formula:
HR = 130 − e
Where:
HR = Rockwell hardness value
e = indentation depth after removal of the major load, expressed in units of 0.002 mm
