    16 CFR PART 1222 – Bedside Cribs

    Category:

    CPC

    What is a bedside crib?

A bedside crib (also known as a bedside sleeper) is a rigid frame assembly attached to an adult bed, providing a sleeping environment for infants. It may include fabric or mesh components (or both) and may serve as the side, end, or floor of the bedside sleeper (or any combination thereof).

What is the purpose of the bedside crib standard?

This standard aims to reduce death and injury risks from bedside sleepers, including entrapment, suffocation, structural integrity and assembly issues, and lack of consumer education on proper use.

CPSC Regulations, Standards, and Test Methods

16 CFR Part 1222 Safety Standard for the Safe Use of Bedside Cribs

ASTM F2906 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bedside Sleepers

What are the requirements for bedside cribs?

ASTM F2906 defines performance, testing, and labeling requirements. Key provisions include:

Compliance with ASTM F2194 (cribs and cradles) – covers sleep environment hazards (asphyxiation, stability, small parts, crushing, shearing, unintentional folding, loading, side height, and sharp edges).

    - Multi‑mode products – prevents hazards when used in other configurations (playard, bassinet, changing table, or hand‑held carrier).

    - Minimum side height on the lower side – prevents falls.

    - Product detachment – ensures secure attachments to prevent falls or entrapment.

    - Fabric side with enclosed openings – prevents pinching and suffocation.

    - Accessories (sleep surface collapse/tilt) – prevents suffocation/entrapment from improper assembly due to missing critical components.

    - Warnings – alert caregivers to fall, entrapment, and suffocation risks.

16 CFR Part 1222 also amends ASTM F2906‑13 to align with the cradle standard (16 CFR 1218) when testing under ASTM F2194, including:

    - Flatness testing angle limit for segmented mattresses set at 10°.

    - More stringent stability testing.

    - New requirements for portable cradle stability hazards.

Additional CPSIA requirements for bedside cribs

    Bedside cribs must comply with:

1.Surface coating – paint shall not exceed 0.009% lead.

2.Lead content – any accessible part shall not exceed 100 ppm.

3.Phthalates – plasticized components shall not contain more than 0.1% of any of the eight restricted phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIBP, DPENP, DHEXP, DCHP).

4.Testing and certification – must be tested by a CPSC‑accredited third‑party lab; based on testing, the domestic manufacturer or importer must issue a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC).

5.Labeling and registration – durable infant/toddler products must bear permanent traceability labels on product and packaging, plus additional markings and a product registration card attached to the product.
