What is a portable bed rail?
A portable bed rail attaches to an adult bed to prevent children from falling, facilitating independent bed access for children typically aged 2 to 5. Two main designs exist: adjacent‑type (resting vertically against the mattress side without extending onto the surface) and mattress‑surface type (placed along the mattress edge). Products made of non‑rigid materials such as foam or inflatables also fall within the scope if they meet the definition, even if not labelled “bed rail”.

What are the requirements for portable bed rails?
16 CFR 1224 and ASTM F2085 include general and performance requirements for:
√ Dangerous sharp edges or points
√ Small parts
√ Exposed wooden components are smooth and free of splinters.
√ Lead in paint
√ Permanence of warning labels
√ Structural Integrity
√ Open end
√ Closed opening
√ Opening caused by displacement of the bed rail on the adjacent-style portable bed rail
√ Opening caused by the displacement of the portable bed rail at the top of the mattress
√ Opening created by the displacement of a portable bed rail on beds manufactured by a specific maker

√ Opening between the bedposts (e.g., headboard, footboard) and the ends of portable bed rails
Portable bed rails must not create hazardous gaps between the rail and mattress that could cause falls, and must be tested to prevent unsafe assembly. Labels and instructions must include enhanced warnings. Mounting components (anchors or straps) must be permanently attached to the rail and also bear warning labels.
Additional CPSIA requirements for portable bed rails
Portable bed rails must comply with:
1.Surface coating – paint shall not exceed 0.009% lead.
2.Lead content – any accessible part shall not exceed 100 ppm.
3.Phthalates – plasticised components shall not contain more than 0.1% of any of the eight restricted phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIBP, DPENP, DHEXP, DCHP).
4.Testing and certification – must be tested by a CPSC‑accredited third‑party lab; based on testing, the domestic manufacturer or importer must issue a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC).
5.Labeling and registration – durable infant/toddler products must bear permanent traceability labels on product and packaging, plus additional markings and a product registration card attached to the product.
