IEC 1144 Test method for the determination of oxygen index of insulating liquids
IEC 1144 Standard Introduction
IEC 1144 specifies a test method for determining the oxygen index of insulating liquids. The oxygen index determined according to IEC 1144 represents only one aspect of the combustion characteristics of a product.
IEC 1144 Scope of Application
IEC 1144 applies to liquids with a kinematic viscosity of 50 mm²/s or less at 40 °C ± 1 °C.
IEC 1144 Test Instrument Instructions—Combustion Chamber
The combustion tube shall be a heat-resistant glass tube with an inner diameter of at least 75 mm and a minimum height of 450 mm, vertically mounted on a base through which a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen can flow.
To ensure uniform mixing of oxygen and nitrogen, the bottom of the combustion tube shall be filled with glass beads with a diameter of 3 mm to 5 mm to a height of 80 mm to 100 mm. Combustion tubes with other dimensions may also be used if equivalent test results can be obtained.

IEC 1144 Test Method
- Adjust the igniter flame height according to the relevant requirements. The test shall be conducted at an ambient temperature between 15 °C and 30 °C. Place the test cup at the center of the combustion chamber, use a pipette to add the liquid specimen into the test cup, and return the glass combustion tube to its original position.
- Determine the initial oxygen concentration based on experience or actual test conditions. Adjust the oxygen and nitrogen control valves to achieve the required oxygen concentration while maintaining an appropriate mixed gas flow rate inside the combustion chamber.
- Ignite the specimen and record the combustion time. Make preliminary adjustments according to the flame behavior to determine the lowest oxygen concentration that can sustain combustion of the liquid specimen for at least 60 seconds. Then perform final adjustments until the oxygen concentration at which the specimen fails to burn for 60 seconds at the next lower concentration is determined.
- Finally, use this critical oxygen concentration to test five specimens. If three or more specimens burn for 60 seconds or longer, this oxygen concentration shall be defined as the oxygen index.
