    IEC 60754-1 (GB/T 17650.1) Standard Introduction

    When cables or optical fibre cables burn, their materials may release halogen acid gases, which are corrosive and toxic and may pose risks to human health and the environment.

    IEC 60754-1 and GB/T 17650.1 provide methods for evaluating halogen acid gas emissions and flame-retardant performance, supporting fire safety design and ensuring compliance with environmental protection requirements and relevant regulations.

    These standards specify methods for measuring hydrogen halide gases generated during the combustion of cable and optical fibre cable materials, enabling accurate determination of halogen acid gas concentrations under fire conditions. This helps ensure the safety of cables and optical fibre cables during use and supports the development and standardization of related industries.

     

     

    IEC 60754-1 (GB/T 17650.1) Scope of Application

    IEC 60754-1 (GB/T 17650.1) applies to the determination of halogen acid gas content released from cables or optical fibre cables.

     

     

    IEC 60754-1 (GB/T 17650.1) Test Method

    1. Test Equipment Description:
    - Tubular Furnace: The effective length of the heating zone is 480–620 mm, with an inner diameter of 38–62 mm. The furnace is equipped with an adjustable electric heating system.
    - Quartz Glass Tube: The tubular furnace shall be equipped with a corrosion-resistant quartz glass tube with an inner diameter of 30–46 mm. The extension length of the tube on the inlet side shall be 60–200 mm, and the outlet side shall extend 600–1000 mm.

    - Burning boat: It is recommended to use any of the following materials: ceramic, fused quartz (crystal), or soapstone, with dimensions as follows: length 45–100 mm; width 12–300 mm; internal depth 5–10 mm.

     

     

    2. Sample Testing (Formal Test)
    1) Sample Heating Procedure:

    a) Place the specimen in the combustion boat. Place the combustion boat containing the specimen inside the quartz glass tube of the tubular furnace and position it at the center of the furnace.

     

     

    b) Adjust the airflow rate using a needle valve according to the standard requirements and maintain the airflow rate throughout the test.

    c) Place a thermocouple or other suitable temperature-measuring device in the combustion boat. Heat the specimen uniformly to (800 ± 10) °C within (40 ± 5) minutes, and maintain this temperature for (20 ± 1) minutes.

    2) Solution Preparation After Cooling:

    After cooling to room temperature, transfer 200 mL of the solution into a beaker using a pipette, then add the following reagents in sequence:

    a) Approximately 4 mL of concentrated nitric acid;

    b) 20 mL of 0.1 mol/L silver nitrate solution using a pipette;

    c) Approximately 3 mL of toluene or isopentyl alcohol.

    3) Precipitation:

    Shake the solution thoroughly to precipitate the formed silver chloride.

    4) Titration:

    Add 1 mL of an aqueous ammonium iron(III) sulfate solution (40% w/w) containing several drops of 6 mol/L nitric acid. After mixing, stir with a magnetic stirrer and titrate with 0.1 mol/L ammonium thiocyanate solution until the solution turns red, indicating the endpoint.

    5) Recording:

    Record the volume A of the 0.1 mol/L ammonium thiocyanate solution consumed during the sample test.

    3. Blank Test

    Before conducting the sample test described above, a blank test shall be performed.

    Except that no specimen is placed in the combustion boat during the heating procedure, all other steps shall be carried out under the same conditions as the sample test.

    Record the volume B of the 0.1 mol/L ammonium thiocyanate solution consumed during the blank test.
