    IEC 60754-2 (GB/T 17650.2) Standard Introduction

    IEC 60754-2 (GB/T 17650.2) specifies the test apparatus and procedures for determining the acidity (pH value) and electrical conductivity of gases generated during the combustion of cable or optical fibre cable materials after absorption in an aqueous solution, thereby evaluating their potential corrosive effects.

    Acidity is an indicator of the corrosiveness of combustion gases. Highly acidic gases may cause damage to equipment and facilities. By measuring the acidity and conductivity of these gases, the potential risks of materials during fire conditions can be evaluated, providing a basis for fire protection design and safety measures to protect human life and property.

     

    IEC 60754-2 (GB/T 17650.2) Scope of Application

    IEC 60754-2 (GB/T 17650.2) applies to the determination of acidity and conductivity of gases generated from cables or optical fibre cables during combustion.

     

     

    IEC 60754-2 (GB/T 17650.2) Test Method

    1. Test Principle:

    A material sample is taken from the cable, cut into small pieces, and evenly distributed into designated containers. Each sample shall have a mass of 1 g.

    During the test, the material is vaporized or combusted in the furnace, and the generated gases are absorbed by distilled water through bubbling. After the test period, the pH value and electrical conductivity of the solution are measured.

    The procedure is repeated twice, and the average value of the three measurements is calculated.

     

     

    2. Test Equipment Description:
    - Tubular Furnace: The effective length of the heating zone is 480–620 mm, with an inner diameter of 38–62 mm, and equipped with an adjustable electric heating system.
    - Quartz Glass Tube: The tubular furnace shall be equipped with a corrosion-resistant quartz glass tube with an inner diameter of 30–46 mm. The extension length of the tube on the inlet side shall be 60–200 mm, and the outlet side shall extend 600–1000 mm.

    - Burning boat: It is recommended to use any of the following materials: ceramic, fused quartz (crystal), or soapstone, with dimensions as follows: length 45–100 mm; width 12–300 mm; internal depth 5–10 mm.
