Test Background
Packaging transport is an essential part of the circulation of goods. Whether packaging provides adequate protection to products during distribution directly affects the interests of all economic activities involved. The International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) is an international organization dedicated to transport packaging safety. ISTA has published a series of standards, test procedures, and test projects based on package types, distribution models, and product categories, providing a unified basis for evaluating the safety performance of transport packaging. ISTA defines packaging protection performance, reduces risks in the transport environment, provides ISTA test standards, and enhances confidence in the safe delivery of packaged goods.

The ISTA 1 Series - Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests, is designed to challenge the strength and robustness of the product and packaging combination, and is useful as a screening test, particularly when used as a consistent benchmark over time. It should be emphasized that the ISTA 1 Series does not include environmental simulation tests.
Test Scope of Application
ISTA-1 Series: Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests
Examines the strength and sturdiness of the product and packaging together. Not designed as a procedure that simulates environmental conditions; can be used as a screening test and serves as a basic test procedure.
ISTA 1 is a series of procedures intended to test the strength of the product packaging system. More specifically, ISTA defines Series 1 as follows:

Test Method Introduction
ISTA 1A consists of two parts of testing:
A. Vibration on a mechanical vibration table at 1 inch amplitude (also known as mechanical vibration) for nearly 1 hour
B.10 free fall drops at specified heights in a specific sequence (heights between 8" and 30", with heavier packages receiving lower drop heights). This ISTA test procedure is somewhat "outdated" – if you (or your customer) cannot afford more advanced test procedures, you may perform it. This procedure may also produce "false failure" results on your package, potentially leading to additional costs. However, if you have access to a random vibration table, ISTA 1G will allow you to conduct better testing using the same methods and sequence. If you have access to a compression tester and need to evaluate the compression strength of your packaging, ISTA 1C is the right choice for you.

ISTA 1B Include 3 Sections:
A. Vibration;
B. You have chosen from 6" High‑altitude free fall, or oblique impact, with an impact velocity of 69IPS( inches per second ) To all 4 Test from each aspect;
C. The raised edge from 8" Altitude is decreasing.
But frankly speaking, 1B It’s also a bit “outdated,” if you’re capable of doing… ISTA3B , you will be closer to the actual test results.

ISTA 1C is very similar to ISTA 1A but with the addition of a compression test. In Part A, you have the option to use either random vibration or mechanical vibration testing; in Part B, you have the option to use either free fall drop or incline impact; and in Part C, you have the option to use Apply and Hold or Apply and Release, or plain static weight on a load distribution plate. This is clearly a more modern version of the old ISTA 1A, still simple but utilizing "modern testing machines."
ISTA 1D Is a very similar method for testing individual (meaning "non-unitized") packages over 150 lb. It consists of 4 parts:
A.Compression test (with 3 options)
B. Vibration (mechanical or random)
C. Impact test (free fall drop or incline impact)
D. Raised edge drop.
ISTA 1E applies to grouped loads on pallets or skids that are shipped together, regardless of weight. It consists of 3 parts
A. Vibration (mechanical vertical or random);
B. Impact (incline impact at 69 IPS impact speed)
C. Raised edge drop from 8"
ISTA 1G is a modern version of ISTA 1A – applicable to individual packages under 150 lb, consisting of two parts:
A. Section: Random vibration (the main difference is that ISTA 1G uses random vibration, whereas 1A vibration is fixed) and
B. Part: You choose between free fall drop or incline impact.
ISTA 1H is a modern version of ISTA 1B – applicable to individual packages over 150 lb, consisting of three parts:
A. Section: Random vibration;
B. Part: You choose between free fall drop or incline impact;
C. Section: Rotational edge impact (required when face 1 is not tested).
Criteria for Determination
After testing, there must be no packaging rupture, cracking, product damage, or liquid leakage.
