    ISTA 3 Series: General Simulation Performance Tests

    Test Background

    Packaging testing can be conducted at many stages of the product cycle: prior to new product launch, upon new packaging redesign, when product damage is a concern for your company, or when your customer requires testing. The best approach is to incorporate packaging transport testing as early as possible in the packaging design process.

    Among these, the ISTA 3 Series procedures were developed around the turn of the century, when an increasing number of laboratories gained access to various types of drop testers and servo-hydraulic vibration tables. Another major factor contributing to the development of its unique test methods was the vast and growing body of vibration and shock data recordings, which were rapidly synthesized into repeatable laboratory events.

     

     
     

    ISTA 3 Series procedures are commonly referred to as "general simulation" tests. While they resemble the ISTA 1 and ISTA 2 Series in many ways, they differ from both in the following aspects:

    1. They eliminate stand-alone compression tests and replace them with so-called compression-vibration, which is random vibration under a top load applied to the package in one or (where possible) more orientations. The top load to be used is calculated and distributed across the test package based on its dimensions rather than its weight. The only exception here is the ISTA 3E test, which genuinely seeks to simulate "warehouse compression" that is more common in full truckload environments, as opposed to the "vibration and compression" combination typical of LTL environments.

    2. They significantly reduce drop heights across all package weight categories to create more realistic and evenly distributed impacts to edges, corners, and faces

    3. They adopt two new, more modern vibration profiles to reproduce:

    A. True steel-spring truck vibration, and

    B. Much rougher short-wheelbase truck vibration, which is typical of the parcel delivery environment.

    4. ISTA 3 Series procedures clearly distinguish between different package types – standard, small, flat, elongated, pail or short-cylinder packages (in 3A), individual loads under 200 lb and over 200 lb, or palletized loads (in 3B) and unitized loads (in 3E). Each of these package types is subject to different test sequences to reflect their characteristic behavior in transit. There is also an added benefit: a very distinct test method within ISTA 3A addresses packages containing liquids when shipped by air, which requires vibration within a low-pressure chamber.

    5. In the ISTA 3B procedure for palletized loads, substantial attention is given to pallet handling simulations, reflecting push-pull, corner rotation, and the so-called "forklift abuse cycle," which challenges the integrity of the pallet itself as well as the tie-down (connection) between the load and the pallet.

    6. ISTA 3B also employs a critical stability test – the Tip/Top Over 3B test – which accurately predicts stability loss, particularly important for unitized loads and high-center-of-gravity palletized loads. This is a very simple yet revolutionary tool that predicts the combined effects of deceleration and centrifugal forces that typically govern packages within a truck. In simple terms, it simulates what happens when a driver brakes hard, takes a sharp turn, and/or hits some serious bumps on the road.

    All of these changes have resulted in a highly robust and reliable system for testing and evaluating a full range of small to large loads and reliably predicting their performance through distribution channels. The 3 Series has gained strong recognition from carriers and shippers alike and is currently the most popular method for evaluating small to large loads, whether individual or palletized.

     

     
     

    Test Scope of Application

    ISTA 3 Series: General Simulation Performance Tests

    Designed to provide laboratory simulation of the general sequence of damaging motions, forces, conditions, and transport environments encountered in distribution. Applicable to a wide range of environments, such as various vehicle types and routes, or varying levels of handling exposure. Characteristics will include random vibration with simple profiles, different drop heights applied to test samples, and/or atmospheric conditioning. These ISTA procedures and tests offer the benefit of shortened packaging development time, increased confidence in meeting product launch deadlines. They also ensure product protection, which demonstrates increased profitability through reduced transit damage and product loss. They may also lead to more balanced distribution costs and higher customer satisfaction.

    Packaged products weighing up to 70 kg (150 lb) shipped through parcel delivery systems

    Atmospheric conditioning, compression test, fixed displacement or random vibration test, and impact test

    ISTA-3B

    Packaged products shipped less-than-truckload (LTL)

    Atmospheric conditioning, compression test, fixed displacement or random vibration test, and impact test

    ISTA-3E

    Unitized loads of identical packaged products shipped in full truckload

    Atmospheric conditioning, compression test, random vibration test, and impact test

     

    Test Overview

    ISTA 3A  procedure applies to individual packages weighing less than 150 lb. ISTA 3A is the best test method for predicting the parcel shipping environment. 72-hour climate conditioning is optional (with 6 temperature and humidity combinations available). This procedure distinguishes between standard, small, flat, elongated, and cylindrical packages. Each has a different test sequence.

    The 3 mandatory sections for the standard procedure are:

    A. Impact (free fall drop) Sequence 1 – a total of 9 drops, with the last 2 drops on the bottom, and the drop height for the first to last drop being twice the height of the other drops. Drop heights are reduced for heavier loads.

    B. Random vibration under calculated top load: steel-spring truck profile – 60 minutes on the bottom face, 30 minutes on the large side, 30 minutes on the small side, plus 30 minutes unloaded on the bottom face using the "short-wheelbase" profile.

    C. Impact (free fall drop) Sequence 2 – a total of 7 drops.

    ISTA 3A also requires that whenever corrugated outer packaging is tested, basis weight testing is performed on the samples and the results are recorded in the test report

    Packages containing liquids that are shipped by air and/or at high altitudes are subject to two different vibration sections performed under low atmospheric pressure using different vibration profiles applicable to air transport

     

    Drop Impact Test

     

    ISTA 3B Procedure applies to 4 package types:

    a. Standard packages under 200 lb,

    b. Standard packages over 200 lb,

    c. Cylindrical (regardless of weight), and

    d. Palletized or slip-sheet package types.

    Among these, ISTA 3B is the best test method for predicting the LTL (less-than-truckload) shipping environment.

    72-hour climate conditioning is optional (with 6 temperature and humidity combinations available). The test sequence differs for each package type, so we will focus here on the palletized load test sequence, which consists of 7 steps and is the longest.

    A. Tip/Top Over test on both sides of the pallet to 22 degrees. If any of these cause the pallet to tip over (we can restrain the load from actually tipping where possible), it must be noted in the report. Attention all shippers of combined, palletized, and stretch-wrapped items – this tells you in advance whether your load will arrive to your customer in a domino effect.

    B. Rotational edge drop and corner drop

    C. Incline impact on 2 opposite sides to 48 IPS or free fall drop from a height of 3"

    D. Top load random vibration (steel-spring truck profile, time in hours = (shipping miles)/5, in 30-minute increments)

    E. Forklift handling sequence, including the "forklift abuse cycle" for 4 cycles

    F. Rotational edge drop and corner drop

    G. Incline impact to 48 IPS or rotational edge drop from a height of 3"

     

    Compressionn Testing

     

    ISTA 3E Procedure: Intended for use in 3 A type of package in which these are always assembled together as a single load:

    a. Pallet / Complete packages on skateboards are wrapped with stretch film or strapped together, regardless of their weight.

    b. A single machine is strapped to a pallet or otherwise mechanically secured to it, regardless of its weight,

    c. A tray with multiple items and a top tray or HSC( Weight not considered ) They are fixed together in the sleeve.

    ISTA 3E It is used for prediction. FTL( Complete vehicle ) The optimal method for testing the transportation environment. 72 Hourly climate control is optional, ( There is 6 A variety of temperature and humidity combinations are available. ) . The test sequence is the same for each package type. There are 5 A required section:

    A. Impact ( Inclined Plane Impact ) to 42IPS All on the… 4 a side

    B. Impact: 2 A rotating edge from 8" Drop height

    C. Stress test ( You can choose to apply and maintain. (AH) or apply and release (AR) , or use a standard dead weight on the load distribution plate. (DW)

    D. Random Vibration ( Steel spring truck profile, no top load, time ( hour )=( Transmission mile )/5 30 In increments of minutes )

    E. Impact: 2 A rotating edge from 8" Drop height
