Test Background
ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) is an organization dedicated to the specific challenges of transport packaging, with a mission to develop and provide standards, education programs, and tools for the economic, social, and environmental optimization of packaging systems. ISTA testing is a well-defined transport test procedure designed to verify whether your packaging is adequate to protect your products across all shipping environments.
Among them, the ISTA 2 Series test procedures were created in the mid-1990s, when an increasing number of laboratories gained access to various types of drop testers and advanced compression machines with computer control and servo-hydraulic vibration capabilities. While they resemble the ISTA 1 Series in many ways, they are more advanced and are referred to as "partial simulation tests."

In addition to the basic elements of the 1 Series type of non-simulation integrity testing, at least one element from the 3 Series type of general simulation performance testing, such as atmospheric conditioning or fixed displacement vibration, is used. ISTA 2A is a very common packaging test for medical devices and furniture.

Test Overview
ISTA 2A
The ISTA 2A procedure applies to individual packages weighing less than 150 lb. It consists of 5 sections, all of which are mandatory
A. 72-hour climate conditioning (with 6 temperature and humidity combinations available)
B. Compression test (with the option to use Apply and Hold (AH) or Apply and Release (AR), or plain static weight (DW) on a load distribution plate
C. Vibration (mechanical or random). If random, 30 minutes on the bottom face, 10 minutes on the large side, 10 minutes on the small side, and 10 minutes on the top face
D. Impact (free fall drop or incline impact)
E. Vibration again – same as C. above.
Note: Considering the severe drop heights and harsh vibration conditions, this is considered (along with the FEDEX packaging test) to be the most rigorous packaging test among the ISTA projects. Some have exaggeratedly called it a "product destruction program." It may produce "false negative" results. If you don't have to do it, avoid it! However, it is recommended for packages that will be shipped internationally and need to account for the "unexpected" factor.
Stress test
ISTA 2B
The ISTA 2B procedure applies to individual packages weighing over 150 lb. It consists of 6 sections, all of which are mandatory:
A.72-hour climate conditioning (with 6 temperature and humidity combinations available)
B. Compression test (with the option to use Apply and Hold (AH) or Apply and Release (AR), or plain static weight (DW) on a load distribution plate
C. Vibration (mechanical or random). If random vibration is used, 30 minutes on the bottom face, 10 minutes on the large side, 10 minutes on the small side, and 10 minutes on the top face
D. Impact (free fall drop or incline impact)
E. Raised edge drop from 8"
F. Vibration again – same as C. above.
Note: Same as above. May produce "false negative" results. However, it is recommended for packages that will be shipped internationally and need to account for the "unexpected" factor.
Vibration testing
ISTA 2C
The ISTA 2C procedure applies to individual packages containing furniture. Climate conditioning is optional. There are 2 mandatory sections:
A. Random vibration under top load, for a total of 60 minutes. The vibration profile is selected based on the distribution channel;
B. Impact (free fall drop or incline impact).
