In recent years, wet wipes have become increasingly popular among consumers. However, non-flushable products have contributed to a growing number of pipe blockage issues. Australia and New Zealand have introduced the AS/NZS 5328 flushable products standard, which specifies strict testing requirements to determine whether flushable products meet the conditions for safe flushing. These requirements include the ability to pass through toilets and drainage systems, disintegrate after discharge, be transported to wastewater treatment facilities, have no adverse impact on wastewater infrastructure or receiving environments, and contain no plastic materials.

The introduction of the AS/NZS 5328 standard helps regulate the market by enabling consumers to clearly identify which wet wipes can be safely flushed without concerns about sewer blockages. At the same time, it encourages manufacturers of flushable products to produce products that comply with the standard, reducing negative impacts on the environment and infrastructure.

What Are AS/NZS 5328 Flushable Products?
Flushable products are considered suitable for disposal through wastewater networks and treatment systems, including on-site treatment systems. A product is considered flushable if, after passing through wastewater treatment processes, it does not cause significant adverse impacts on these systems and does not remain identifiable in the effluent discharged from these systems.

The AS/NZS 5328 symbol is an example of a symbol used on product packaging to indicate that the product complies with the standard and can be safely flushed. The symbol must be clearly visible on product packaging displayed on shelves and must not be covered by packaging seals or folds, allowing consumers to easily identify compliant products.
AS/NZS 5328 Flushability Testing

(1) Toilet Bowl and Drain Line Clearance Test
The toilet bowl and drain line clearance test verifies that the product is suitable for the plumbing facilities installed in consumer properties.
(2) Household Pump Test
The household pump test verifies that the product does not become caught in or block household pumps.

(3) Slosh Box Disintegration Test
The slosh box disintegration test evaluates whether products can easily break down in wastewater pipelines. Under forces simulating wastewater pipeline conditions, after 60 minutes, most of the product should disintegrate into fragments smaller than 2.45 cm² to prevent blockages.

(4) Municipal Pump Test
The municipal pump test verifies that the product does not become caught in or block municipal wastewater pumps.
(5) Settling Test
The settling test evaluates whether the product settles rather than floats when passing through wastewater treatment facilities.

(6) Aerobic/Anaerobic Bio-disintegration Test
The aerobic/anaerobic bio-disintegration test verifies that the product undergoes biodegradation when passing through wastewater treatment facilities.
(7) Zero Plastic Attestation
The zero plastic attestation requires manufacturers to confirm that the product does not contain any plastic materials.
(Even small pieces of plastic can cause environmental harm. This standard requires manufacturers to demonstrate that plastic is completely absent from the product rather than testing for the presence of plastic.)
