Introduction to DIN-Geprüft Certification
DINCERTCO is an authoritative biodegradability certification body in Europe. Products certified by DINCERTCO can obtain the DIN-Geprüft mark. Products bearing the DIN-Geprüft mark indicate that they comply with strict safety and quality standards, as well as DIN, DIN EN, or DIN EN ISO standards. Products with this mark shall undergo regular inspections.
Certification mark “DIN-Geprüft” = Tested
DIN-Geprüft Biobased Certification
All products containing at least 20% organic content (excluding medical products, toxic products, and fuel products) can obtain the DIN-Geprüft mark certification. You can certify the entire product or only part of a product unit, thereby minimizing testing requirements and making the process more economical.
According to the proportion of biobased carbon content, the quality levels are classified as follows:
◉ Biobased content 20–50%
◉ Biobased content 50–85%
◉ Biobased content >85%
Testing is based on the following standards:
◉ ASTM D 6866 – “Standard Test Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis”
◉ DIN SPEC 91236 (CEN/TS 16137) – “Plastics – Determination of Biobased Carbon Content”
◉ ISO 16620 – “Plastics – Biobased Content”
◉ DIN EN 16785-1 – Biobased Products – Biobased Content – Part 1: Determination of Biobased Content Using Radiocarbon Analysis and Elemental Analysis
The certificate is valid for six years and can be extended through corresponding monitoring, supplementary and special tests and evaluations, as well as extension requests. If a biobased product is compostable, the DIN-Geprüft Compostable mark can also be applied for.
DIN-Geprüft Compostable Certification
Home Composting Certification
DIN CERTCO provides certification for products made from biodegradable materials that are compatible with home and garden composting. Certified products are awarded the “DIN-Geprüft Home Compostable” mark, along with a unique registration number. Products that pass home composting tests can also apply for ABA (Australasian Bioplastics Association) certification and REAL (Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd.) certification at the same time, meeting the requirements of different markets.
Testing standards are based on NF T51-800 “Plastics – Specifications for Plastics Suitable for Home Composting”. The following tests are required:
◉ Chemical characteristics
◉ Complete biodegradability
◉ Disintegration under laboratory-scale conditions
◉ Plant compatibility (ecotoxicity test)
◉ Earthworm toxicity test (required for AS 5810 certification)
Materials (such as pellets) and semi-finished products (such as films) can be certified. The certification is valid for six years, and one chemical characterization test must also be conducted during the validity period of the certificate.
Industrial Composting Certification
Industrial composting, also known as commercial composting, refers to large-scale composting designed to process large quantities of organic waste. Through DIN CERTCO industrial composting certification, products can obtain both the “DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable” mark and the Seedling compostability mark from European Bioplastics. Both certifications are based on the DIN EN 13432 standard.
Products obtaining the “DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable” certification can apply for certification from BPI (applicable to the North American market), ABA (applicable to the Australian market), and REAL (applicable to the UK market) after passing additional relevant tests, and obtain authorization to use the corresponding compostability marks.Products carrying any of these three marks indicate that they comply with industrial composting certification requirements under EU, US, Australian, and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. Only one application and test are required to meet the requirements of different markets simultaneously.
Industrial composting requires the following tests:
◉ Chemical characteristics
◉ Complete biodegradability
◉ Ecotoxicity test
◉ Material identification by infrared spectroscopy
◉ Earthworm toxicity test (required for AS 5810 certification)
The certificates for Seedling compostable certification and DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable certification are valid for 3 years. Certificates for registered raw materials and intermediates are valid for 6 years.
DINplus Biowaste Bags Certification
Based on the DIN EN 13432 and DIN EN 14995 testing standards that comply with the requirements of the German Biowaste Ordinance, biowaste bags can obtain DIN CERTCO’s Biowaste Bags certification (DINplus Biowaste Bags) after completing a 6-week composting test. The certificate is valid for 5 years.
