    Packaging Testing

    Category:

    Package

Packaging testing is a comprehensive process that simulates real-world supply chain activities within a laboratory environment to evaluate whether goods are adequately protected during actual transit. ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) is an organization dedicated to the specific challenges of transport packaging. ISTA's industry-developed test standards are trusted worldwide, informing global manufacturers on how to address the evolving hazards of the global transportation environment. The organization pioneered packaging performance testing over 60 years ago and has since become the most trusted, knowledgeable, and respected authority in the field of packaging performance testing.

    Benefits of Packaging Testing

The objectives of packaging testing are to reduce damage and warranty claims, meet supplier certification requirements, and lower shipping costs through lighter and smaller packaging. Packaging testing helps reduce costs associated with product loss during transit, such as breakage and damage. Early-stage product testing can mitigate these issues and avoid potential losses that would be significantly more expensive to remedy later in the development cycle. Ensuring that your packages remain secure throughout the shipping process also reduces customer complaints and minimizes replacement claims from retailers receiving damaged goods.

SATISFY  packaging product testing capabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

ISTA 1 Series Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests

The 1 Series non-simulation integrity performance tests challenge the strength and robustness of the product and packaging combination. ISTA 1 Series tests are not intended to simulate environmental events; they are useful as screening tests, particularly when used as a long-term benchmark.

ISTA 1A : Packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less

ISTA 1B : Packaged products weighing over 150 lb (68 kg)

ISTA 1C : Extended testing for individual packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less

ISTA 1D : Extended testing for individual packaged products weighing over 150 lb (68 kg)

    ISTA 1E : Unitized loads

ISTA 1F : Packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less (random vibration)

ISTA 1G : Packaged products weighing over 150 lb (68 kg) (random vibration)

ISTA 2 Series: Partial Simulation Performance Testing

This series combines the basic test elements of the ISTA 1 Series with the advanced testing elements of the ISTA 3 Series: tests include at least one element from the 3 Series type of general simulation performance testing (atmospheric conditioning or random vibration), combined with the fundamental elements of the 1 Series non-simulation integrity tests.

ISTA 2A : Packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less

ISTA 2B : Packaged products weighing over 150 lb (68 kg)

    ISTA 2C : Furniture packaging

ISTA 3 Series: General Simulation Performance Testing

This series consists of general simulation performance tests designed to replicate, through laboratory simulation, the damaging motions, forces, and environmental conditions encountered in the transport environment. These tests are applicable to a wide range of scenarios, including various vehicle types and routes, as well as varying levels of handling exposure. Key features include random vibration with simple profiles, different drop heights applied to test samples, and/or atmospheric conditioning such as tropical humidity or winter/freezing conditions.

ISTA 3A Packaged products shipped through parcel delivery systems weighing 70 kg (150 lb) or less (standard, small, flat, or elongated)

ISTA 3B : Packaged products shipped in less-than-truckload (LTL) freight

ISTA 3E : Unitized loads of identical packaged products shipped in full truckload

ISTA 3F : Packaged products weighing 100 lb (45 kg) or less shipped from distribution centers to retail outlets

ISTA 3H : Mechanically handled bulk transport containers

ISTA 3K : Fast-moving consumer goods for the European retail supply chain

ISTA 4 Series: Enhanced Simulation Performance Testing

Test elements are customized on a case-by-case basis using the latest and most specific hazard profiles and parameters to achieve enhanced simulation. ISTA 4AB allows users to generate customized test plans that closely link testing and sequencing to user-defined distribution patterns, incorporating extensive current and quantitative information about distribution environment hazards.

ISTA 4AB : Packaged products transported through known distribution channels

ISTA 6 Series: Member Performance Testing

Test protocols created by ISTA members to serve their specific purposes and applications. These tests may be entirely original or may be modifications or variations of ISTA procedures or projects, or other published and accepted tests. ISTA reviews and approves these tests, but primary responsibility rests with the initiating member.

ISTA 7 Series: Development and Testing

This series is intended for the development of transport packaging. These tests may be used to compare the relative performance of two or more container designs but are not intended to evaluate the protection provided by the packaged product. 7A, 7B, and 7C have been discontinued from this series.

ISTA 7D : Thermal testing of transport packaging. This procedure is a development test used to evaluate the effect of external temperature exposure on individual packaged products. It is designed to test the relative ability of packaging to protect the product when exposed to a test cycle of temperature conditions.

ISTA 7E : Test standard for thermal transport packaging used in parcel delivery system transit. Designed to evaluate the effect of external temperature exposure on individual packaged products shipped via parcel delivery systems. The profile set was developed through characterization of the shipping environment and is intended to represent seasonal cold and heat maximums and minimums. It may be used as a "stand-alone" profile or in conjunction with process standards such as ISTA Standard 20.
