    What is Law Label?

Law Label originated in the early 1800s. Its purpose is to inform consumers of the “invisible” filling components inside bedding products and upholstered furniture, usually called “Stuffed / Filling Materials”.It's a legally effective label affixed to the product, describing the fabric and filling composition / proportion of mattresses, upholstered furniture, and soft-filled items like pillows, cushions, and plush toys. Unless removed by the consumer, this label must not be removed during circulation or sale.

    Regulatory Requirements

Currently, 32 states in the US, as well as Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba in Canada, mandatorily require bedding products and upholstered furniture to display a Law Label. However, the regulated products and Law Label requirements vary by state/province. Therefore, if Law Label and TSSA registration for multiple states/provinces and subsequent certificate maintenance are required, the costs, time, and personnel demands can pose a serious challenge. For this reason, SATIFY provides a one-stop service: one application enables products to meet multiple states' requirements.

What is a Uniform Registry Number (URN)?

The Uniform Registry Number (URN) is a unified registration number. When a state requires bedding products or upholstered furniture to be registered, the URN is the registration number issued by the relevant department of that state government. In addition, when applying for Law Label registration in multiple states, the same URN must be used. In other words, if your company has obtained a URN in one state, it is recommended to use the same URN when applying in other states. This approach can eliminate restrictions on product circulation between states and greatly reduce the time and effort required for certificate maintenance.

TSSA - Technical Standards & Safety Authority

TSSA is the Technical Standards and Safety Authority of Ontario, Canada. It requires soft-filled products sold in Ontario to obtain TSSA registration and meet the corresponding labeling requirements before sale. In addition, Quebec and Manitoba also have similar registration requirements. Therefore, if products are exported to Canada and the specific province of sale is not clearly defined, SATISFY recommends registration in the above three provinces respectively to ensure smooth product sales throughout Canada.

In addition to the URN, some US states require down bedding products sold in that state, such as quilts, pillows, mattresses, etc., as well as second-hand bedding products, to bear a label marked with the Sterilization Permit number issued by the specific agency of that state government. Otherwise, the products may not be placed on the market for sale.
