Mandatory Certification for Smart Home Electronics and Appliances in Europe and the United States

As technological advancements and changing consumer demands continue to shape the market, the prospects and application scenarios for smart homes will continue to expand. To support the transition from traditional homes to smart homes and ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements in European and American markets, governments in these regions have introduced a series of requirements for smart home products. If smart home suppliers and manufacturers fail to keep up with relevant EU and U.S. regulations, standards, and mandatory certification requirements, they may face penalties, customs seizures, product recalls, and other potential consequences.
In May 2024, an electric sofa was detained by UK customs. According to available information, the product only had a UK fire safety test report and lacked electrical testing reports or certifications, such as EMC, LVD, and MD compliance documentation. EMC Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2014/30/EU)
EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Directive (2014/30/EU) refers to the ability of equipment or systems to operate properly in their electromagnetic environment without causing unacceptable interference to other equipment. It mainly covers the following standards:

LVD Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU)
The main objective is to ensure that electrical equipment placed on and put into service in the EU market is safe for people, animals, and property; operates safely within its intended voltage range; and prevents fires, electric shocks, and other electrical hazards. MD Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC)
Ensure that all machinery placed on or operated in the EU market meets specified safety and health requirements. The regulation focuses on machinery design and construction to ensure safety and protect operators’ health. The 2023 update clarifies that electric furniture and 3D printers fall under applicable requirements. It mainly covers the following standards:

ErP Energy Efficiency Directive (EU)2023/826
On April 18, 2023, the European Union issued a new energy efficiency regulation, (EU) 2023/826, which will enter into force and apply from May 9, 2025. The new regulation replaces the previous energy efficiency regulation, (EC) No 1275/2008, and introduces the following key changes:
- The new regulation no longer applies to products such as washing machines, dishwashers, kitchen appliances, and televisions. Instead, it introduces energy efficiency requirements for adjustable furniture and electric construction equipment.
- It emphasizes energy efficiency requirements for off mode, standby mode, and networked standby mode to reduce energy consumption when equipment is not in use.
- From May 9, 2025, the previous energy efficiency regulation will be fully repealed.
These changes aim to improve the energy efficiency of electrical products and equipment in the EU, address global challenges related to sustainable development and environmental protection, and promote innovation and market competitiveness.
