OK Biobased is an environmental label for biobased low-carbon products launched by Vinçotte, a Belgian inspection, testing, and certification organization. The program was initiated in September 2009 and was initially only available for product material manufacturers. Since January 2010, the OK Biobased program has been extended to manufacturers of finished products. At the end of 2017, TÜV AUSTRIA took over Vinçotte’s certification program and integrated OK Biobased into the TÜV AUSTRIA certification system.
with increasing consumer awareness of environmental protection, the market for products manufactured from renewable raw materials continues to grow. Driven by this environmental awareness, there is a need for an independent and high-quality method to verify the renewability of raw materials. The OK Biobased certification fully meets this demand. Obtaining OK Biobased certification demonstrates that the material originates from plants, agricultural by-products, or agricultural waste. The evaluation method behind OK Biobased certification is simple and enables accurate, scientific measurement and calculation of the actual biobased content. After certification, manufacturers of biobased products can place the label on their products or product packaging to distinguish them from conventional petrochemical-based products.
Certification Requirements
All products (or parts of products) manufactured from bioplastics and/or natural materials are applicable for the OK Biobased certification program, including intermediate products and basic materials (such as raw materials, inks, pigments, masterbatches, or additives). Exception: Solid, gaseous, or liquid fuels are not applicable.
Each product must meet the following two requirements:
◉ The total carbon content of the product must be at least 30%.
◉ The carbon content from renewable raw materials (biobased carbon content) must be at least 20%.
Star Classification
OK Biobased defines biobased materials according to their biogenic carbon content. The standard EN 16640 is used to evaluate the percentage of biobased carbon content and total carbon content, and a star rating system is used to indicate the biobased content of products.
Each certified product is rated from one to four stars.
One star indicates a biobased carbon content between 20% and 40%. Two stars indicate a biobased carbon content between 40% and 60%. Three stars indicate a biobased carbon content between 60% and 80%. Four stars indicate a biobased carbon content above 80%.
Certification Process
1.Collect all required information and prepare the documentation file. The duration of this step depends on how quickly the applicant can provide all necessary information.
2.Analyze biobased content and total carbon content, evaluate test results, and complete certification. This step requires four to six weeks.
The use of certified components and/or ingredients does not automatically mean that the finished product is qualified.Any modification to certified raw materials, certified intermediate products, or certified finished products, if not described in the product description of the certification report, must be notified to the certification body and may require re-evaluation.
