What is BSCI?
BSCI is the abbreviation for Business Social Compliance Initiative (formerly Building Social Compliance Initiative). It is a global initiative established by the Foreign Trade Association (FTA), now known as amfori. BSCI aims to improve social standards throughout global supply chains by promoting responsible business practices.
BSCI provides companies with a framework to assess and improve the social compliance performance of their suppliers. It focuses on labor conditions, workers’ rights, and workplace safety. The initiative encourages companies to take a proactive approach toward social responsibility and work toward long-term improvements throughout their supply chains.
Scope of BSCI Audit
BSCI audits mainly focus on the following 13 areas:
● Social management systems
● Worker involvement and protection
● The rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining
● No discrimination
● Fair remuneration
● Decent working hours
● Occupational health and safety
● No child labor
● Special protection for young workers
● No precarious employment
● No bonded labor
● Protection of the environment
● Ethical business behavior
BSCI Audit Rating Levels
Grade A (Outstanding):
● At least 7 audit areas receive an A rating, with no C, D, or E ratings
● Valid for 2 years
● Unannounced spot checks are required
Grade B (Good):
● A maximum of 3 audit areas receive a C rating, with no D or E ratings
● Valid for 2 years
● Unannounced spot checks are required
Grade C (Acceptable):
● A maximum of 2 audit areas receive a D rating, with no E ratings
● Valid for 1 year
● No unannounced spot checks required
Grade D (Insufficient):
● A maximum of 6 audit areas receive an E rating
● Valid for 1 year if accepted by the customer (most customers do not accept this rating)
● No unannounced spot checks required
Grade E (Unacceptable):
● At least 7 audit areas receive an E rating
● Not accepted by customers
BSCI Audit Process
1.Audit Application–The company decides to apply for a BSCI audit. SATISFY develops a BSCI audit plan.
2.Contract Signing–Based on the preliminary information provided, SATISFY signs a contract with the applicant.
3.Self-Assessment–The company conducts a self-assessment using the BSCI self-assessment questionnaire, which covers various aspects of the supply chain, including labor rights, health and safety, and environmental management. Alternatively, a third-party certification consulting organization can provide professional guidance to help the company successfully pass the audit.
4.Audit and Evaluation–After completing the self-assessment, an audit is conducted on the company’s facilities and supply chain under the arrangement of a BSCI certification organization. The audit evaluates the company’s compliance with the BSCI Code of Conduct, including labor rights, health and safety, environmental management, and business ethics standards.
5.Corrective Action Plan (CAP)–If any non-compliance or areas requiring improvement are identified during the audit, the company must develop a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) to address these issues. The CAP should outline the actions the company will take to resolve non-compliance issues and improve social and environmental performance.
6.Verification Audit–After implementing the CAP, the company must undergo a verification audit to ensure that corrective actions are effective and that the company complies with the BSCI Code of Conduct.
7.Certification–If the verification audit is successful, the company will receive a BSCI report, which can be used to demonstrate the company’s commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices to customers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
8.Annual Surveillance Review–Companies are required to undergo regular surveillance reviews to maintain audit validity. These reviews are conducted periodically to ensure continued compliance with BSCI Code of Conduct requirements.
