    Amazon Compact by Design Certification

In 2019, Amazon made a significant commitment to its sustainability and co-created the Climate Pledge – to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Beyond this commitment, Amazon has also taken a series of measures to achieve this goal, including the introduction of a sustainability label – the Climate Pledge Friendly Badge. In addition to 42 external certification partners (which may increase) such as Rainforest Alliance or Carbon Trust, Amazon has also launched its own certification called Compact by Design.

Why would an e-commerce company introduce sustainability certifications? Is this badge what you need? Stay tuned for the following.

What is behind the Compact by Design badge?

The Compact by Design certification is awarded to companies that design their products and product packaging in a more efficient manner than comparable competitors.

Amazon achieves several objectives through Compact by Design certification:

    1)Reduce carbon emissions

Smaller packaging size and weight mean lower carbon emissions. While the savings from a single product or even packaging are very small, at scale it makes a noticeable difference.

    2)Improve shipping efficiency

Efficiency is one of Amazon's top priorities. They know that even a small reduction in product size or weight can lead to significant savings in shipping costs.

    3) Reduce packaging waste

E-commerce is a major contributor to waste, and due to its scale, Amazon is no small factor in that waste. The Compact by Design badge fills a gap in sustainability certifications focused on reducing packaging volume.

The idea of packaging for e-commerce originated from its purpose being different from offline sales situations. In physical stores, packaging is one of the main tools to make your product stand out and attract customers. Online, there is less need for extra-large, shiny, and uniquely shaped packaging (however, there is an opportunity to create packaging that will not disappoint customers). Therefore, packaging can focus on serving more practical purposes.

How to qualify for Compact by Design certification

For your product to be considered more efficient, its "unit efficiency" must be above the average of comparable products.

Below is the general formula Amazon uses to calculate unit efficiency (regardless of product category):

Amazon considers the size of the product packaging and its weight, and compares it to the actual product.

The lower the "unit efficiency" value, the more efficient the product. This value is then compared to an established category threshold. If the value is below the category threshold, the product is considered "more efficient" and receives the "Compact by Design" badge.

6 Ways to Improve Product Efficiency

Smaller-sized packaging may be the most obvious method, but it is not the only way to make your products more efficient than those of your competitors.

When evaluating your current products or designing new products, you may consider the following 6 different possibilities:

1.Less PackagingThis is all about reducing the size of packaging and making the package as close as possible to the actual product size.

2.Less Air in ContainerDo you remember those large bags of potato chips that are only half filled? Reducing the amount of air inside packaging is one way to improve efficiency. After all, there is no need to impress customers online with the size of your packaging.

3.More Efficient ShapeThe more square and compact the shape of the product/package, the easier it is to fill shipping containers in a Tetris-like way.

4.Less WeightUsing lighter packaging materials can reduce the overall product weight, thereby improving transportation efficiency.

5.Waterless TechnologyIn recent years, one of the most popular product examples is the transformation of shampoo into solid bars, which significantly reduces product volume while maintaining the same amount of use.

6.Concentrated ProductsSelling concentrated products allows customers to increase the capacity of your product at home.

Benefits of the Compact by Design Badge

In this article, we have outlined how Amazon’s umbrella certification “Climate Pledge Friendly” can benefit your sales on Amazon. The benefits of this green label include:

    Help your products stand out

    Attract the right customers

Improve click-through rates and conversion rates

Amazon’s Compact by Design certification also provides other benefits, and compared with other certifications, it may be particularly attractive.

    1) Simple and Direct

Although there are currently dozens of certifications that can qualify your products for the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, Compact by Design is easier compared with lengthy and complex third-party certifications, as it only requires you to design your products in a more efficient way than your competitors.

    2) May Receive More Attention

Amazon has strong motivation to promote its own programs and certifications because these certifications are more aligned with its own objectives.

If you look at the amount of space occupied by the Compact by Design badge on the product detail page, you will notice the difference compared with other certifications. A large section below the product description is dedicated to displaying various details of Compact by Design:
