What Products Does AVA American Vegetarian Association Certification Cover?
As the only widely recognized vegetarian certification organization in the United States, AVA focuses on certifying vegetarian products in various categories, including food, beverages, dietary supplements, skincare products, and household products.
Types of AVA American Vegetarian Association Certification
The vegetarian community in the United States is highly diverse, including strict vegans, vegetarians, plant-based diet consumers, and other groups. To meet the needs of different consumers for vegetarian products, the AVA American Vegetarian Association provides various types of vegetarian certifications:
(1) Vegetarian Certification (VEGETARIAN)
⬤ Products must not contain ingredients derived from killed or slaughtered animals.
No meat, poultry, fish, or insects
No leather products
⬤ Products may contain ingredients derived from animals that are not killed or harmed.
May contain milk, eggs, honey, and wool
⬤ Products must not be processed with animal-derived ingredients.
Does not contain sugar filtered with animal bone char
Does not contain animal-derived flavors, colors, or enzymes produced through animal slaughter
Does not contain any animal-derived ingredients (such as gelatin)
⬤ Product owners must not have conducted or commissioned animal testing of the product or its ingredients.
(2) Vegan Certification (VEGAN)
⬤ Products must not contain any animal-derived ingredients, including but not limited to:
No meat, poultry, fish, or insects
No leather, wool, or silk
No milk, honey, or bee products
⬤ Products must not be processed with animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.
No sugar filtered using animal bone char
No animal-derived flavors, enzymes, or colors
No ingredients clarified using animal-derived products such as gelatin
⬤ Product owners must not have conducted or commissioned animal testing of the product or its ingredients.
(3) Animal-Free Certification
⬤ Products must not contain any animal-derived ingredients, including but not limited to:
No meat, poultry, fish, or insects
No leather, wool, or silk
No milk, honey, or bee products
⬤ Products must not be processed with animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.
No sugar filtered using animal bone char
No animal-derived flavors, enzymes, or colors
No ingredients clarified using animal-derived products such as gelatin
⬤ Product owners must not have conducted or commissioned animal testing of the product or its ingredients.
(4) Plant-Based Certification (PLANT-BASED)
⬤ Products must be primarily composed of plant-based ingredients.
More than 80% of the product ingredients by weight must come from plant sources (excluding water)
A maximum of 20% of ingredients may come from acceptable non-plant-based sources
⬤ Products must not contain any animal-derived ingredients.
No meat, poultry, fish, or insects
No leather, wool, or silk
No milk, honey, or bee products
⬤ Products must not be processed with animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.
No sugar filtered using animal bone char
No animal-derived flavors, enzymes, or colors
No ingredients clarified using animal-derived products such as gelatin
⬤ Products may contain other ingredients that are neither animal-derived nor plant-derived.
May contain minerals, microorganisms, enzymes, fungi, algae, flavors, colors, gums, acids, and water
⬤ Product owners must not have conducted or commissioned animal testing of the product or its ingredients.
(5) Recommended Certification (RECOMMENDED)
Products comply with one of the following AVA certification standards: Vegan, Vegetarian, Plant-Based, or Animal-Free.
Application Process of AVA Certification
Submit Certification Application: The client completes the application form, confirms the quotation via email, and provides payment and product information submission details.
Determine Certification Scheme: Based on product characteristics and the applicant’s certification requirements, the appropriate vegetarian certification scheme is confirmed.
Evaluate Vegetarian Products: After receiving payment, ingredient lists, product labels, and samples, the formal certification review begins.
Obtain Certification Mark: After successful certification, the certification certificate and certification mark are issued. The certification is valid for one year.
