    Category:

    BEST FOR KIDS

In households with young children, cord safety is a key priority in the window covering industry. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified corded window coverings as one of the top five household hazards. From 2014 to 2019, the CPSC reported 46 deaths related to strangulation involving window covering cords among infants and young children. On average, about 8 children aged 12 and under die each year from strangulation caused by window covering cords.

    Best for Kids Certification Overview

To help consumers easily identify products most suitable for homes with young children, the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) established the "Best for Kids™" certification program. This third-party program defines the standards for window covering products most suitable for homes or facilities with young children.

The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) is an alliance of major US. window covering manufacturers, importers, and retailers. It is dedicated to educating parents and caregivers about the potential strangulation risks associated with window blind and shade cords, and encourages consumers to use only cordless window coverings or products with cords that are inaccessible in homes with young children

In short, WCMA is responsible for establishing the Best for Kids certification program, while WCSC is responsible for promoting it.

    Best for Kids Certification Process

Manufacturers submit window covering products they consider eligible for the “Best for Kids™” certification to WCMA-approved third-party testing laboratories. Physical samples must be submitted to the testing laboratory for review and analysis to determine whether they comply with the program standard ANSI/WCMA A 100.1. The testing laboratory evaluates the products according to the program’s qualification requirements. For products that pass testing, the laboratory issues a report to the applicant stating that the products are eligible to carry the “Best for Kids™ Certified” label.

Products that meet the Best for Kids™ requirements must SATISFY one of the following conditions:

    No internal cords

    No accessible internal cords

Have accessible internal cords, but the accessible cords do not form a hazardous loop
