The environmental friendliness of building materials is reflected not only in the control of chemical hazards but also in their thermal insulation performance. In simple terms, it refers to the heat retention performance of materials. Thermal insulation performance can be evaluated through Thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity refers to the amount of heat transferred through a material with a thickness of 1 m and an area of 1 m² within 1 hour under steady-state heat transfer conditions, when the temperature difference between the two surfaces is 1 K (or °C). Generally, thermal insulation materials refer to materials with a Thermal conductivity ≤ 0.2.

In general, thermal insulation materials share common characteristics such as being lightweight, porous, and having a cellular or fibrous structure. They reduce heat transfer by using the trapped air inside the material to block thermal conduction.

According to the requirements of the California Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation Act and Rules and Regulations, all thermal insulation materials must be registered with the California BEARHFTI before being distributed, sold, or used in California.
According to the regulation, thermal insulation materials are defined as materials used in buildings, appliances, or structures that are intended to reduce heat transfer or heat loss. These materials include:
