In recent years, many consumers have become interested in smartphone features, including resistance to liquids and dust. Beyond smartphones, all electronic products may deteriorate or malfunction when water or dust enters the device.To evaluate the water and dust resistance of electronic products, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) developed the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system, which classifies the protection level of enclosures against the ingress of dust and liquids. These ratings are widely used across the industry.

IEC 60529 was developed to assess and classify the resistance of electrical and electronic equipment enclosures against the ingress of dust and liquids. It also evaluates the accessibility of potentially hazardous parts inside the enclosure. Developed by the IEC Technical Committee, this standard uses IP ratings to classify the protection levels provided by electrical equipment enclosures with a maximum rated voltage of 72.5 kV. It also defines the tests required to verify whether enclosures meet these requirements.
IP The composition of levels

Protection levels are indicated by numbers. An IP rating consists of the letters “IP” followed by two digits. The higher the number, the higher the level of protection. Among them:
◉ The first digit indicates protection against solid objects, ranging from tools or fingers that may contact electrical conductors or moving parts and cause hazards, to airborne dirt and dust that may damage internal circuits.
◉ The second digit indicates protection against liquids, including different forms of liquid exposure, such as dripping, spraying, and immersion.
For example, IP65 indicates a dust protection level of 6 and a water protection level of 5. The following table shows the protection capabilities corresponding to each level:
First digit: Protection against solid objects
Second digit: Protection against liquids


Standards in Other Countries/Regions
◉ The EU standard EN 60529 and the UK standard BS EN 60529 are both derived from the international standard IEC 60529. Their requirements and test methods are the same as those specified in IEC 60529.
◉ In the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) defines enclosure types in NEMA 250. The following table summarizes the corresponding IEC 60529 IP ratings for each NEMA enclosure type. However, the ratings between the two standards are not directly equivalent. NEMA ratings also consider additional product features and tests not covered by IP ratings, such as operation under icing conditions, enclosures for hazardous locations, and cable entry knockouts.
