    The importance of formaldehyde emission testing is self-evident. As a volatile organic compound, formaldehyde can be released from building materials, furniture, and other products, entering indoor air and posing potential health risks to humans. Therefore, to protect indoor environmental quality and human health, countries around the world have established formaldehyde emission testing standards.

     

     

    U.S. formaldehyde testing standards mainly include ASTM D6007, which provides a small-scale chamber method using an online infrared analytical technique to determine formaldehyde concentrations in air and water. ASTM E1333 specifies a large chamber method for determining formaldehyde concentration and formaldehyde emission rates from wood products. This test method is commonly used to evaluate formaldehyde emission levels from wood-based products (such as plywood, fiberboard, etc.). ASTM E1333 calculates formaldehyde emission rates by monitoring changes in formaldehyde concentration within the test chamber over time, thereby evaluating the formaldehyde release levels of wood products. The European Union uses EN 717-1 and EN 717-2 standards for formaldehyde emission testing.

    China’s formaldehyde testing is mainly based on GB 18580, which specifies formaldehyde emission limits for interior decoration materials. In addition, Japan adopts JIS A1460, which specifies the methods and requirements for determining formaldehyde emissions from building panels using the desiccator method.

    Understanding and complying with these standards is essential for manufacturers, distributors, and consumers. Only through rigorous testing can formaldehyde emissions from products be ensured to meet relevant regulatory requirements, thereby protecting indoor air quality and human health.

     

    Scope of Products Subject to Formaldehyde Emission Testing

    Formaldehyde emission testing covers a wide range of products that may release formaldehyde, including various building materials, furniture, household products, textiles, and other items:

    (1) Building Materials:

    - Wood-based panels (such as plywood, particleboard, and MDF)
    - Paints, adhesives, and sealants
    - Flooring and carpets
    - Wallpaper and wall coverings
    - Insulation materials
    - Construction adhesives and grout

    (2) Furniture:

    - Furniture panels (such as MDF and particleboard)
    - Sofas, beds, chairs, and other furniture
    - Furniture surface coatings and paints

     

     

    (3) Household Products:

    - Household appliances (such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, etc.)
    - Carpets, curtains, and windows
    - Interior decorations (such as carpets, wall decorations, decorative items, etc.)

    (4) Other Products:

    - Automotive interiors
    - Office supplies (such as printers, photocopiers, office desks and chairs, etc.)
    - Medical equipment
